Detroit Red Wings have many fronts to attack, but how do all of them end?

Jim Biringer of NHLRumors.com and Full Press NHL was on TSN Radio in Montreal on Monday and was asked about the situation in Detroit and how things will play out for the Red Wings moving forward.

Host: “Let’s get it going here with the National Hockey League. So Sean and I have been off for Sean how many, a couple of weeks, four weeks? I haven’t paid attention to it. Zero. We know nothing, Jim. We know nothing. So a couple of things. I am still surprised, and I would imagine the entire hockey community is still surprised by what’s going on with the Detroit Red Wings and the lack of movement when it comes to some serious positions. How is this going to end? And where is this going with the Detroit Red Wings?”

Florida Panthers are the 2027 Stanley Cup Favorites

Jim Biringer: “Yeah, no, I mean everybody’s waiting for them to make a general manager hire. Obviously, mid-July comes, Steve Yzerman steps down, forced out, asked to move on to another position. Whatever the story is coming out of Detroit, whatever the week is. Most likely he was asked to move on and try to salvage a relationship with Dylan Larkin, who asked to be traded at the end of the season. It comes out around the Stanley Cup Final that he wants out. Yzerman leaves now. They’re trying to get a new general manager in.

Obviously, the usual suspects have been there, like Jeff Kealty has been interviewing. Brett Peterson. They’re looking to go outside the organization now. One name that has come up has been a guy in baseball, Jeff Greenberg. He runs the Detroit Tigers. Is that somebody that they’re going to bring in? Do they view him as an external option, or is he more internal?

Shawn Horcoff, one of their assistant general managers, is doing everything on an interim basis. But not only do they have to deal with the Larkin trade request that’s still out there, but Simon Edvinsson has not been signed yet- a restricted-free defenseman. Eligible for an offer sheet still. No one has offer-sheeted him yet. There were whispers that Carolina could do it. They haven’t done it yet.

There are so many moving parts in Detroit that until they get that general manager figured out, or whoever’s running president of hockey ops, whatever the title is. Could be two people, could be one person. Until they get that figured out, business is pretty much at a standstill in Detroit, and we’re what, less than four weeks away from the start of training camp opening.”

NHL Rumors: The Latest on Detroit Red Wings GM Search and Dylan Larkin

NHLRumors.com Note: The Detroit Red Wings are a mess and at a standstill on player movement. While Shawn Horcoff is handling some business, owner Chris Ilitch continues to interview candidates internally and externally to fill the role he created when he told Steve Yzerman it was best for business that we part ways. Now, Larkin is still out there and wants a trade, while Edvinsson needs a new deal, but his representatives don’t know who to speak to. Such a great franchise is in turmoil as they look to turn things around on and off the ice.
