Virginia field hockey team’s run of 114 in a row leads list of active high school sports win streaks

Theoretically, a high school sports team has a 50-50 chance of winning any given game. Under those odds, the probability of winning 25 straight is just 1 in 33.6 million.

MaxPreps identified 175 teams that have defied those odds with active winning streaks ranging from 25 games to a national-best 114 by the Tabb (Yorktown, Va.) field hockey team.

Of course, high school matchups are rarely true toss-ups and teams riding long winning streaks are typically favored to win. Even so, putting together a streak spanning an entire season — or several — is an extraordinary achievement.

Tabb has won five consecutive state championships without losing a game during that run. The Tigers are also closing in on the longest winning streak in Virginia high school sports history. They need 14 more victories to tie the 128-game streak set by the Kelly (Wise, Va.) girls tennis team from 1991 to 1997.

Tabb is the only team on the list with more than 100 consecutive wins but five others have reached at least 70. Essex (Essex Junction, Vt.) owns the nation’s longest active girls volleyball streak at 86 games while Bear River (Garland, Utah) leads girls lacrosse with 79 straight victories.

Three girls basketball teams have also surpassed 70 consecutive wins. Johnston (Iowa) leads the group with 79 followed by Lynden (Wash.) with 74 and Princess Anne (Virginia Beach, Va.) with 71.

The list includes active winning streaks in boys and girls volleyball, basketball, ice hockey, water polo, soccer and lacrosse, as well as football, baseball, softball, flag football and field hockey. Results are current through Aug. 27 with all 50 states represented.
