Coventry City play host to Hull City in the Premier League this afternoon after the two teams had contrasting fortunes on the opening day of the season.
Frank Lampard’s side were given a rude awakening last Friday night when they were beaten 3-0 by reigning champions Arsenal after their promotion as champions of the Championship.
Meanwhile, Sergej Jakirovic’s men enjoyed a spectacular start to their Premier League campaign by beating giants Manchester United 2-0 at the MKM Stadium.
Now, they face off against each other after coming up from the Championship together, in what could be a test to see who prepared better over the summer.

One area of the pitch that looks worse for wear for both teams ahead of this clash is central midfield, as both teams lack players who could be expected to provide a regular threat at the top end of the pitch.
Both of Hull’s goals came from central defenders against Manchester United, whilst Coventry failed to score against Arsenal, and it remains to be seen where the goals will come from in midfield.
They have both added new attack-minded midfielders to their respective squads, though, as the Tigers have signed Jens Hjerto-Dahl and Coventry have brought Gustavo Hamer back to the club.
The Dutchman, however, only scored five goals in 37 matches for Sheffield United in the Championship last season, which does not suggest that he is likely to step up as a big goalscorer in the Premier League this term.

Hjerto-Dahl, meanwhile, had a strong start to the 2026 campaign for Tromso, with seven goals, but he underperformed his xG by almost two goals in the 2025 campaign.
These statistics suggest that neither player may be ready to hit the ground running as a consistent scoring threat from the middle of the park for Hull or Coventry.
Hull and Coventry battling it out for midfield upgrade
Hjerto-Dahl and Hamer’s unproven goalscoring qualities may be why both clubs are said to be looking at a player who could be an upgrade on both of them.
According to TEAMtalk, Hull City have already made contact to hold talks with Al Shabab FC to enquire about a deal to sign Josh Brownhill before the end of the summer transfer window.
The report claims that Coventry City are one of a number of other teams also keeping tabs on his situation, as the Saudi Pro League side may opt to cash in on him to help their financial situation.
It adds that the Tigers believe that his experience in the Premier League and in English football more broadly would make him a strong addition to Jakirovic’s squad.
Both teams should push hard to get a deal done for the experienced midfielder before Tueday’s deadline if Al Shabab make him available for a transfer, as he would be a terrific signing.
The 30-year-old talent would provide a threat as a goalscorer that both teams currently lack in the middle of the park, as his record in recent seasons suggests that he would be a significant upgrade on both Hamer and Hjerto-Dahl.

Prior to joining Al Shabab, where he has scored 11 goals in all competitions, the central midfielder racked up a staggering haul of 18 goals in the Championship for Burnley in the 2024/25 campaign.
The English talent scored more goals in that Championship season than Hjerto-Dahl or Hamer, who have both never hit double figures for goals, have in their entire careers.
On top of that, Brownhill scored four goals from 1.93 xG and supplied two assists in 23 starts in the Premier League for the Clarets in the 2023/24 campaign, which was his last experience of playing in the top-flight.
That means that Hull or Coventry would be signing a player who has already shown that he can be effective in the Premier League as an attacking threat, on top of having been in phenomenal goalscoring form in the two seasons since then.
A haul of 29 goals in all competitions for Burnley and Al Shabab since the start of the 2024/25 campaign is more than Hjerto-Dahl or Hamer have already managed in two seasons combined, suggesting that he would be an upgrade on both of them.
Brownhill would join as a star who has experience and quality for teams who desperately need both in their fight to avoid relegation from the Premier League, which is why this transfer race could be a significant one for both clubs.
