Aston Villa have now launched contact to sign Matias Soule, with Unai Emery personally a fan of the AS Roma attacker ahead of the summer transfer window.

Aston Villa transfer news: Matias Soule talks begin

It’s not easy for Aston Villa to plan their summer transfer window. All could yet change for better or for worse. Should they operate with the assumption that Champions League football will be theirs to enjoy next season, then big-money targets could hit their crosshairs. However, the flip side to that is damning.

If Emery’s side fail to win the Europa League final, which they reached in style over Nottingham Forest on Thursday, or finish in the top five of the Premier League, then PSR problems could come knocking again.

The Villans would much rather operate with a glass half-full mentality, given that the other end of that means the sale of a star like Morgan Rogers.

One player that could arrive as a result of Champions League football is an Emery favourite. According to Giallorossi in Italy, Aston Villa have launched contacts to sign Soule from AS Roma.

The attacking star is free to leave the Italian club if potential suitors match his €30m (£26m) price-tag this summer and the fact that Emery is a fan of his could go a long way towards luring Aston Villa into paying such a fee.

Whilst the winger is free to leave Roma, it’s not because of form. Soule has been involved in 11 goals in 30 league games so far this season and is beginning to prove many right who praised his talent – including Jacek Kulig. The scout dubbed the 23-year-old “superb” in 2023 and could now watch him arrive in the Premier League.

Emery admits Aston Villa “still need” Premier League

For some around Villa Park, the pressure may be off. The Europa League final represents the perfect route towards Champions League qualification and Emery is the perfect man for the job in that regard. The Spaniard himself, however, was the first to admit that Aston Villa “still need” Premier League form despite reaching Istanbul on Thursday.

“We still have a final to play. We can win and we can lose the final and if we lose we have achieved nothing. We need the Premier League. We need to try and focus on the match on Sunday to get Champions League positions and hopefully we can get it in the Premier League and then the final.”

The manager, who’s looking to win the Europa League for the fourth time in his career, was also full of praise for his side – telling reporters: “Today we tried to prepare better, push with the players and we did it. We were focusing on what we needed to improve and the players responded fantastic. How we won the match was in the plan we had.

“They were so focused. It was the only match we played with this circumstances, semi-final, we did two years ago in Conference League but we played the second leg away. Now we can feel happy and proud.”
