Celtic are now planning a shock move for an “incredible” manager, who could be brought in as an alternative to Robbie Keane.

Hoops hold positive talks to appoint Keane

Dermot Desmond is open to Martin O’Neill remaining at Parkhead, after doing a stellar job as interim boss, but positive talks have now been held with Robbie Keane, who has been out of work since resigning as Ferencvaros manager last month.

However, hiring Keane could be yet another unpopular decision by Desmond, with the Irishman’s potential appointment facing vocal opposition from parts of the fanbase, given his links to Maccabi Tel Aviv.

With that in mind, Desmond may be better off appointing an alternative option, and the likes of Ipswich Town boss Kieran Mckenna and Portugal manager Roberto Martinez have also been under consideration.

However, a shock new target has now entered the frame.

Celtic eyeing move for “incredible” Keane alternative

According to a report from Sports Boom, Celtic are now considering a move for Arne Slot, who was dismissed by Liverpool at the end of May, after following up a Premier League title-winning debut campaign with a trophyless season.

AC Milan are also keen on the Dutchman, whose ‘stock remains high’, and there is a belief he would be a ‘popular appointment’ amongst the Hoops’ fanbase, having averaged just under two points per game during his time on Merseyside.

Aside from guiding the Reds to their 20th English title, the 47-year-old also lifted the 2022-23 Eredivisie with Feyenoord, and won the Dutch cup the following year.

Steven Gerrard paid tribute to the ex-Feyenoord boss following his recent sacking, saying: “Gutted for Arne Slot because in his first year, he had done an incredible job. Taking the reins from Jurgen Klopp, that was a tough task and big shoes to fill, and he had done it seamlessly.

“It’s very difficult to win the Premier League, and I know that more than most, so for him to deliver that in year one cannot be forgotten, so I think he will go down in the history books and be remembered forever.”

Even though Slot was unable to follow up his fantastic first season at Anfield by lifting another trophy, his CV is very impressive, and his experience of winning league titles would serve him well in the role of Celtic manager.
