Tottenham take major step forward to secure West Ham star Mateus Fernandes

A PSG transfer target is now closing in on an agreement to join Tottenham this summer, according to a colleague of Fabrizio Romano.

Tottenham’s midfield rebuild remains one of the club’s biggest priorities as work continues behind the scenes on multiple transfer targets.

Spurs have already strengthened other areas of Roberto De Zerbi‘s squad this summer, completing deals for Jan Paul van Hecke, Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson.

Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali continues to feature prominently in Tottenham’s plans, and reports throughout the week have suggested Spurs are preparing to open formal discussions with Newcastle after receiving encouragement from the Italy international’s camp.

Tonali is viewed as one of the standout names on Tottenham’s shortlist as they look to add proven quality and experience.

However, the Newcastle star is not the only midfielder being targeted.

Indeed, Tottenham have also been pursuing West Ham United’s Mateus Fernandes.

The Portugal international has attracted growing interest after establishing himself as one of the most highly-rated young midfielders in the Premier League.

Spurs have been monitoring his situation alongside several other clubs, including Man United, with Ligue 1 and European champions PSG also believed to have made contact over a potential move (Foot Mercato).

Now, a fresh update suggests progress is being made.

Tottenham ‘very close’ to agreeing personal terms with Mateus Fernandes

According to Marca journalist Matteo Moretto, who collaborates with Romano on YouTube, Tottenham are very close to reaching an agreement with Fernandes over personal terms.

His report indicates discussions between the player’s representatives and Spurs have advanced significantly in recent days, and Fernandes is said to be open to the move.

That development is viewed as an important step given the level of interest surrounding the midfielder.

Despite that competition, Tottenham appear to have moved into a strong position when it comes to the player’s side of the deal.

At this stage, however, negotiations with West Ham have not yet started.

Moretto reports that there have been no official club-to-club talks so far, and that means any potential transfer remains at an early stage despite the apparent progress on personal terms.

Fernandes has enjoyed a rapid rise over the last two seasons.

After making his breakthrough in English football at Southampton, he established himself as a star performer for West Ham and attracted attention for his technical quality and versatility.

The ongoing pursuit of Tonali also demonstrates the club’s burning desire to back De Zerbi, with David Ornstein confirming Spurs could sign both the Italian and Fernandes.
