England head into their final Group L match against Panama knowing victory would secure top spot, but they’ll be without star right-back Reece James.
Thomas Tuchel‘s side made an impressive start to the tournament by defeating Croatia 4-2 in their opening fixture.
Harry Kane led the way with two goals, converting from the penalty spot before adding his second before half-time to move level with Gary Lineker on 10 World Cup goals for England.
Jude Bellingham also found the net after the break with a powerful finish to restore England’s advantage, and Marcus Rashford then wrapped up the victory late on with England’s fourth goal.
Croatia twice reduced the deficit through Martin Baturina and Petar Musa, but England always looked capable of producing another response.

The Three Lions finished the match with 20 attempts on goal and made an impressive start to Group L as Tuchel’s attacking players caused problems throughout the contest.
England were unable to build on that result in quite the same fashion against Ghana.
The Three Lions were held to a goalless draw despite enjoying the majority of possession and territory.
England struggled to break down a disciplined Ghana defence and created fewer clear-cut opportunities than they managed against Croatia.
Jordan Pickford was called into action occasionally to preserve England’s clean sheet, while both Nico O’Reilly and Harry Kane both spurned glorious late chances one after the other.
Jude Bellingham was also fortunate to escape a red card for covering his mouth.
The draw left England on four points from their opening two matches and in control of their own destiny heading into the final group game against Panama.
One concern to emerge from the Ghana match centred on James.
The Chelsea defender started both of England’s opening World Cup fixtures and completed the full 90 minutes against Croatia before again featuring throughout the draw with Ghana.
James has become one of Tuchel’s most trusted players since the former Chelsea boss took charge of England.
His ability to operate as both a traditional full-back and an attacking wing-back has given England added flexibility on the right-hand side.
The 26-year-old also enjoyed an impressive domestic campaign.
James made nearly 40 appearances for Chelsea across all competitions during the 2025/26 season, contributing at both ends of the pitch with goals, assists and consistently strong defensive displays.
However, James reported hamstring tightness after the draw with Ghana.
The defender was unable to train fully with the rest of the squad ahead of the Panama match. Instead, he completed an individual recovery programme under the supervision of England’s medical staff.
England dealt further Reece James injury blow after Panama news
BBC Sport reports there are now fears James could also miss England’s Round of 32 fixture should the Three Lions qualify for the knockout stages.
The report states the hamstring injury is expected to sideline the defender for at least two matches.
That rules James out of the meeting with Panama and leaves him facing a race against time to be fit for England’s first knockout game.
His absence would represent a significant setback for Tuchel given James’ importance to England’s defensive structure.
England are already without Newcastle United defender Tino Livramento, reducing Tuchel’s options on the right side of defence.
Players including Djed Spence, Ezri Konsa and Jarell Quansah are capable of filling the position if required, but they’re low on natural full-backs.
England’s immediate focus remains on finishing the group stage strongly and securing progression to the knockout rounds.
Victory over Panama would guarantee top spot in Group L and extend England’s unbeaten run at the tournament.
The fitness of James, though, is likely to remain one of the biggest talking points around the squad over the coming days.
BBC Sport reports there is genuine concern that England may have to cope without one of their first-choice defenders beyond the group stage as Tuchel waits for further updates on the hamstring problem.
