There can be no escaping it: Newcastle United have once again had a top transfer target swept from under their noses.
Liverpool are the culprits once again, but as the dust has now settled on the Victor Munoz saga, the Magpies need to respond with incision, cutting through the fanbase ‘s anxiety that this is to be another frustrating summer window.
Newcastle were in advanced talks for Osasuna’s 22-year-old winger, whose profile suggested he would be the perfect Anthony Gordon replacement.
Ex-Newcastle United scout Paul Montgomery expressed his disappointment over the Toon’s naïveté in the recruitment department, but there is plenty of time for Eddie Howe and technical director Ross Wilson to put things right.
Newcastle open talks to sign Munoz upgrade
Last summer at St. James’ Park, the technical director’s seat was vacant. Now, Wilson is collaborating with Howe, and fans expect this partnership to be reflected through an improved transfer strategy.
We’re still waiting to see the fruits, and while the potential sale of Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur, or another suitor, needs to be tackled, strengthening the frontline and easing fan concern is the more pressing concern.
Well, according to TEAMtalk, Newcastle have engaged in fresh talks with Real Betis over signing Abde Ezzalzouli, better known as Ez Abde.
Talks for Munoz had previously advanced beyond interest in the Moroccan left winger, but the door was left ajar, and has been opened once again.
Valued in the region of £51m, Ez Abde would not come cheap, but he has all the attributes to suggest that Newcastle would get bang for their buck, the Moroccan maybe even trumping Munoz.
Why Ez Abde could be a Victor Munoz upgrade at Newcastle
The 24-year-old Ez Abde’s direct and physical style could see him slot right into life at Newcastle, with such attributes maybe even making him a better pick than Munoz.
Howe’s system, when at its peak, relies on physicality and potency. Something of a tactical chameleon, he is open to alterations, so some disgruntled Magpies fans might point toward intractable tactics that failed to offer solutions to the range of problems that frustrated Newcastle throughout the 2025/26 campaign.
Ez Abde would dovetail right in. He scored ten goals and provided eight assists for Real Betis last season, crucial in securing Champions League football for the Andalusian outfit. He might even have more in his locker than Munoz.
The pair are both among the most underrated wingers in Spanish football, electric on the ball and capable of beating opponents with zippy movements. Newcastle need potency in the danger area, though, and Munoz might have the answer there.

Munoz is a young and barnstorming talent, but it’s hard to justify an argument regarding his advantage of Ez Abde when assessing their respective seasons. The Betis star is “relentless” in his dribbling, says analyst Ben Mattinson, who even considers him as a similar profile to someone like Paris Saint-Germain’s Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
Moreover, he gets stuck in, perhaps offering more in way of protection and combativeness than Munoz, who is by no means flimsy. Indeed, this is a perfect illustration of Ez Abde’s quality. He is the real deal, and only absent from his nation’s World Cup squad due to an unfortunate injury sustained earlier this month in a warm-up game against Norway. He assisted a goal in that one.
Gordon ebbed and flowed in the final third, but the Three Lions star did score 17 goals across all competitions last season, filling in for Alexander Isak as Newcastle’s other forwards toiled to little success.
Now, Ez Abde could be the answer, replacing Gordon and ensuring that any frustration over the crescendo of the Munoz saga is buried and forgotten about ahead of a crucial campaign.
