It’s a rare day when Evangelos Marinakis doesn’t get what he wants in the transfer market and, if he gets his wish, Lucas Bergvall will become the latest example of that at Nottingham Forest.

The Tricky Trees are likely to splash the cash again this summer following such a frustrating campaign last time out, and may have an eye-watering budget following Elliot Anderson’s record departure to Manchester City.

Replacing the England international seems to be the instant priority, with Curtis Jones already on Forest’s radar and Bergvall also threatening to steal the headlines.

Football FanCast’s Verdict

Credibility

It’s no secret that Bergvall is looking to leave Tottenham this summer and the Lilywhites have already named their price. The latest update now comes from a reputable source in Sky Sports’ Gianluca Di Marzio and all the signs suggest this could be a long saga.

Finances

Spurs have already been forced to reject an offer worth €50m (£43m), likely from Nottingham Forest, and that means the Tricky Trees will have to at least surpass that if they want to sign Bergvall this summer.

Insight

The Swede is still one of the most impressive young midfielders in the Premier League, despite such a poor campaign last time out and a move away could accelerate his potential.

Impact

The biggest aspect of Anderson’s game that will need replacing is his work out of possession, and that’s where Bergvall could come in. The 20-year-old thrived off the ball under Ange Postecoglou and could have the same license to press at the City Ground.

Forest have the budget, Spurs have named their price and Bergvall wants to leave. All being well, this is certainly a move that could take place in the coming months.

Nottingham Forest lead race to sign Bergvall

According to Sky journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, as relayed by Sport Witness, Nottingham Forest are now leading the race to sign Bergvall this summer.

The Tricky Trees are ahead of Napoli thanks to their better financial position and Tottenham have already received an initial bid, which was likely from the City Ground.

“Instead, Tottenham recently rejected €50m, likely from an English club, likely Nottingham Forest. And I don’t think they’ll go below that threshold. It will always take €50m or more.”

If Nottingham Forest pay over €50m (£43m) to sign Bergvall, then they’d break their current transfer record. That alone should give them plenty to think about.

Bergvall is the wrong player to replace Anderson at Nottingham Forest

Replacing Anderson is set to be a near-impossible task for Nottingham Forest this summer. The new Man City star is one of the best midfielders in the Premier League, especially out of possession. No midfielder, for example, made more recoveries than Anderson in Europe’s top five leagues last season.

As talented as Bergvall is, he is just that right now – a talent. The 20-year-old has not progressed in the last 12 months and the numbers suggest that he would not be a like-for-like replacement for Anderson.

Just last season, Anderson provided a bigger attacking threat, made over double the amount of recoveries and enjoyed a far better duel success than Bergvall. If Nottingham Forest are to splash out, then their replacement needs to match their former star in at least one of those departments.
