Georgia has been one of the more consistent teams in the country over the past two seasons, but consistency has come with one common theme: the Bulldogs have won back-to-back SEC titles and earned two first-round byes in the College Football Playoff just to lose their first game in the playoff both times.

Notre Dame ended Georgia’s run in the Sugar Bowl quarterfinal in the 2024 season, and Ole Miss did the same against the Bulldogs a year later. The question entering 2026 is whether the roster in front of head coach Kirby Smart will break that pattern.

Can Georgia get over the hump and win the national title?

Quarterback Gunner Stockton returns after leading the Bulldogs through both of those playoff runs, along with running backs Nate Frazier and Chauncey Brown.

The defense, which returns 72% of its production from last season, is anchored by defensive backs Ellis Robinson IV and KJ Bolden. Overall, Georgia returns the eighth most production in the nation, and former Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm has pointed to the Bulldogs’ habit of winning close games, six of their seven SEC wins last season came from behind, as a reason for confidence heading into 2026.

The case against Georgia is centered on what was lost. Georgia must find replacements for wide receivers Zachariah Branch, Dillon Bell, Colbie Young and Noah Thomas, along with tight end Oscar Delp and offensive tackle Monroe Freelin, which signals a complete overhaul of the pass-catching group that was around Stockton.

The schedule does not offer an easy path to replace that production either. Georgia plays at Alabama and Ole Miss, then also has a home game against Oklahoma.

Right now, the Bulldogs are a contender for the championship but not the favorite. That positioning reflects both Georgia’s proven floor under Smart, who has a 117-21 record and two national titles in 10 seasons, and questions about whether this group can finally win a playoff game in a 12-team playoff system.

Georgia has the defense, the quarterback experience and the coaching stability to be in the national championship to be in the national championship conversation still. Whether the Bulldogs get there will likely all come down to how quickly the receiving core develops.
