Tottenham have already made two of the biggest statements of the summer by completing a combined £185 million swoop for Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, but they could yet bring in another midfield player.

The ambitious double deal signalled Roberto De Zerbi‘s intent to build a younger, technically gifted squad capable of competing at the very top.

Rather than stopping there, Spurs are also targeting emerging talent across Europe, with the club determined to strengthen both the present and the future of the squad.

One of the latest names to emerge is Ousmane Diabate.

Tottenham rival Brentford for Gençlerbirliği midfielder Ousmane Diabate

According to Daily Mail journalist Simon Jones, Tottenham are in talks over signing the 18-year-old Genclerbirligi defensive midfielder, although Brentford are currently considered the favourites to complete a deal.

Jones reports that discussions are ongoing, but the Bees hold the advantage at this stage of negotiations.

Diabate may not yet be a household name, but he has rapidly established himself as one of the brightest young midfielders in Turkish football.

The Guinea international broke into Gençlerbirliği’s first team during the 25/26 campaign, making over 17 senior appearances as the Ankara club secured safety back in the Turkish Super Lig.

Despite being only 18, he became a regular thanks to his maturity in possession, aggressive ball-winning and ability to shield the defence.

His performances have seemingly attracted scouts from across Europe, with Premier League clubs moving quickly before his value rises further.

Tottenham continue to plan for future with potential Diabate deal

Although Tonali and Fernandes immediately strengthen De Zerbi’s first team, the club remain committed to recruiting elite young prospects who can develop alongside the senior squad.

Diabaté fits that description, with his athleticism, composure under pressure and willingness to cover ground make him the type of midfielder De Zerbi has consistently valued throughout his coaching career.

However, Brentford represent serious competition.

The west London club have earned an outstanding reputation for identifying young players before they explode, offering a clearer pathway to first-team football than many bigger clubs.

That development model could ultimately prove decisive if Diabate prioritises immediate opportunities over joining a big six side.
