The legendary Khabib Nurmagomedov and Islam Makhachev’s coach, Javier Mendez, has a message for former UFC double champion Conor McGregor after the latter’s most recent setback.
This past weekend, McGregor returned to the octagon after five years to run it back with Max Holloway in the main event of UFC 329. Fight week, weigh-ins, press conferences, and the walkout- everything went perfectly and as planned for McGregor and his fans.
However, once the octagon door shut, McGregor injured his right knee while throwing a dangerous kick and was not able to maintain his balance afterwards.
After 69 seconds, seeing McGregor struggling, the referee stopped the contest. Due to the freak accident, spectators did not get to witness what kind of form and level McGregor was in after returning from the five-year layoff. “The Notorious” was also hungry to perform and snap his losing skid, but his knee gave up and ruined all his plans.
The Irishman still has one fight left in his deal and has promised to return after surgery, recovery, and rehabilitation. He is not giving up just yet despite back-to-back freak leg injuries.
Javier Mendez praises “warrior” Conor McGregor despite the bad blood
Javier Mendez lauded Conor McGregor after the head-breaking ending to McGregor’s UFC 329 return. Although the Irishman has had heated rivalries with many of Javier Mendez’s pupils over the years, the AKA head coach believes “The Notorious” worked tirelessly for his comeback and did not deserve to see it end in injury. He told Submission Radio:
“To have a warrior like Conor train as hard as he did after a five-year layoff and make a comeback, only for something like that to happen, your heart has to go out to the guy. I may not like him as a person at times, but I have to respect what a great warrior he is. To see him go out that way is not the way I would want anyone to go out… I feel for him.”
