The summer transfer window is becoming the most frustrating period of every calendar year at Newcastle United. For all their riches, they have simply failed in the market over the last 12 months.

The departure of Alexander Isak left a sour taste last summer, but it’s one that the Magpies may have to get used to. Anthony Gordon has already sealed his move to Barcelona, with Newcastle cashing in for £69m, and Sandro Tonali could be following suit even after Newcastle rejected Tottenham’s £75m offer.

Such sales should hand Newcastle a license to spend big, but they must get things right. They spent the majority of last summer chasing their tail, as Liverpool took Isak, hijacked their deal for Hugo Ekitike and left them rushing towards Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa. It was nothing short of a disaster.

Those on Tyneside have already suffered a familiar fate one year later, with the Reds coming from nowhere to sign Victor Munoz ahead of Newcastle – leaving them back at square one.

Newcastle set to sell Wissa so they can beat Aston Villa to £43m USA star

The Magpies could sell a number of first-team players this summer.

They’ve been forced to re-focus their summer for the umpteenth time and it seems like all involved at St James’ Park are simply fed up of watching their targets go elsewhere.

Newcastle have reportedly made an offer to sign Udinese’s Arthur Atta, whilst also launching talks to sign a key defender before Bayer Leverkusen have the chance to spoil their plans.

Newcastle rush into talks to sign defender

This time, the Magpies are not looking to lose out on their man. According to TeamTalk, Newcastle have restarted talks to sign Dayann Methalie from Toulouse.

It looked as though the Premier League side were in the driving seat to land their target with interest dating back to January, but they’ve been forced to hurry along by Leverkusen’s presence.

Following the appointment of former Toulouse boss Carles Martínez Novell, the German side have a huge advantage in the race to sign Methalie.

Their new manager is personally driving their move to sign the 20-year-old left-back and form a reunion with a player he played a major role in developing.

Newcastle, however, have other ideas. They’ve jumped back into talks in an attempt to prevent yet another hijack.

Methalie’s arrival could end Lewis Hall’s Newcastle career

Alongside Tonali and Gordon, Lewis Hall could also be heading for the exit door at Newcastle. Recent reports have claimed that the defender has fallen out with Eddie Howe, and blames the manager for missing out on a place in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad.

Those rumours have opened the door for Manchester United, who are now interested in bringing Hall to Old Trafford. As things stand, the Magpies would prefer to keep hold of their defender, but the arrival of Methalie could change that.

They’d have an instant replacement and this time before any sale. For all parties, including Hall, it’s a deal that Newcastle should complete this summer.

Who else could Newcastle sign?

That may not be that for Newcastle this summer, though. They’ve also got their sights set on the likes of James Trafford and Folarin Balogun as part of a major revamp.

PIF will have the money to spend within Newcastle’s SCR means and they could finally transform Howe’s squad into a side that doesn’t just rely on individuals, who are always likely to depart.
