Fulham’s Sasa Lukic would not arrive at Ipswich Town as a glamorous signing designed to dominate the headlines.
He would, however, bring many of the qualities Gary O’Neil will need as the Tractor Boys prepare for their return to the Premier League.
The 29-year-old has built his career through consistency and experience across four different countries.
Lukic developed in Partizan Belgrade’s academy before gaining his first sustained taste of senior football during a loan spell with Teleoptik.
He later returned to Partizan, broke into their first team and helped the Serbian giants win domestic silverware before Torino signed him in 2016.
His first spell in Italy was interrupted by a season-long loan at Levante, where he gained experience in La Liga, but once back in Turin, Lukic gradually became an important figure.
He made more than 150 appearances for Torino, operated in several midfield roles and was trusted with the captain’s armband. Rather than functioning as a specialist holding midfielder, Lukic showed he could sit in front of the defence, play as part of a central pair or move higher up the pitch when required.
Fulham then brought him to England in January 2023 on a four-and-a-half-year contract.
Although he was not immediately guaranteed a starting place, Lukic gradually adapted to the pace and physical demands of the Premier League.
He made 30 league appearances during the 24/25 campaign before featuring 26 times in 25/26, recording one goal and two assists.
20 of those latest league appearances came from the starting line-up, showing that he remained a significant part of Fulham’s midfield rather than simply being used as emergency cover.
His solid profile could be extremely valuable to Ipswich.
O’Neil has inherited a team that secured an immediate return to the Premier League but now needs greater experience at the highest level.
Ipswich have already strengthened aggressively, adding players including Abdul Fatawu, Emersonn, Issa Diop and Daizen Maeda as they attempt to build a squad capable of staying up rather than simply enjoying promotion.
Lukic has also been a regular member of Serbia’s senior squad and has experienced major tournaments, difficult qualifying campaigns and high-pressure matches against elite opposition over 62 caps for his country.

Journalist Sam Tabuteau has now reported that Ipswich hold an interest in the Fulham midfielder.
According to Tabuteau, there has not yet been a formal approach, with Lukić currently one of several names on a longer list of midfield targets as O’Neil looks to shore up his engine room.
However, Ipswich are said to be keen on exploring a possible move.
Fulham are under no immediate obligation to sell, although Lukić’s current contract is due to expire in 2027, putting some pressure on the Whites to make a decision.
That could influence their thinking if Ipswich eventually submit an attractive proposal, because the London club may have to decide whether to cash in this summer or risk his value dropping to nothing as he enters the final year of his deal.
Lukic would not solve every problem for Ipswich.
He is not a regular scorer, a major creator or a midfielder who will continually drive into the penalty area, but what he would provide is reliability, with ex-Fulham boss Marco Silva also hailing his ‘brilliant’ form at times.
For a promoted side expecting long periods without the ball, his ability to help the side maintain shape and compete for possession could be invaluable.
Ipswich are still considering several alternatives, and no negotiations have begun.
However, Lukic’s combination of Premier League experience, versatility and leadership makes him one of the more logical players on their reported shortlist.
