Leeds ready to finally replace Crysencio Summerville

Leeds United have a huge opportunity throughout the 2026/27 campaign to reach the next level under Daniel Farke and become an established top-flight outfit.

The Whites fended off relegation during their first season back in the Premier League, with the three newly promoted sides undoubtedly facing a huge task to avoid the drop this term.

The 49ers have certainly put their money where their mouth is this summer, with centre-back Tarik Muharemovic arriving in a £34m deal from Italian outfit Sassuolo.

James Trafford looks set to be the next player to arrive at Elland Road, with the supporters hoping he can end their goalkeeping woes and capture their hearts just as one player did.

How Leeds’ attack has transformed since Summerville’s departure

As Leeds missed out on promotion to the Premier League back in the 2023/24 campaign, it was inevitable that attacker Crysencio Summerville would be moving on to a top-flight outfit.

The Dutch star netted 21 times and registered 10 assists during the aforementioned season, but it wasn’t enough to take Farke’s men back to the big-time.

As a result, he left to join West Ham United for a reported £25m – and has since taken his career to the next level and become a full Netherlands international and even moved to Saudi Arabia for £70m.

Losing the player was a bitter blow, but it’s allowed the Whites to build a balanced attack in recent times – which has seen Dominic Calvert-Lewin lead the front line in the last 12 months.

He has often started for Farke since the manager switched to a 3-4-2-1 system, which has seen Brenden Aaronson recapture his best form in one of the roles behind the striker.

The American has often provided Calvert-Lewin with countless chances within the final third, subsequently allowing the Englishman to net 14 times in the top flight last time around.

However, Farke will no doubt want added reinforcements in the final third to try and emulate the impact of Summerville at Elland Road ahead of the 2026/27 season.

How Leeds can land their next Summerville with £35m star

In an attempt to take the club to the next level, the Leeds hierarchy have made the signing of a new attacker a priority during the closing stages of the summer window.

Julian Brandt appeared to be the club’s number one target in that department, but his decision to sign for Ajax over the Whites has ended any chance of securing his signature.

The supporters shouldn’t worry though, as such a decision has seen the 49ers once again step up their interest in a move for Marseille attacker Igor Paixao.

It’s been reported by French outlet L’Equipe that the Ligue 1 side are looking to raise funds before the end of the summer, with the Brazilian just one player who could be offloaded.

They also claim his current employers have placed a €40m (£35m) asking price on the 26-year-old, with Aston Villa another side in the race for his signature.

It’s not the first time Leeds have targeted the forward, having made various offers for his services last summer during his time at Feyenoord and prior to his move to France.

However, Farke could finally be getting his man this window, with his stats from last season showcasing why he can be the manager’s next version of Summerville.

Paixao registered an average of 1.2 shots on target in Ligue 1 last term, subsequently troubling the goalkeeper after gliding past the opposition’s backline.

He completed 1.3 successful dribbles per 90 last campaign, whilst achieving a 40% shot on target accuracy rate – with such numbers comparable to Summerville during his time at Elland Road.

The Brazilian has also demonstrated his creativity over recent months, as seen by his tally of 1.4 chances created per 90 – resulting in him ending the season on five assists.

His goal tally saw him end the Ligue 1 campaign on 11 combined goal contributions in his 22 outings – with such numbers showcasing how he can have a similar impact to the Dutchman in forward areas.

Paixao’s star quality was also evident on the European stage, as he registered four goals in his eight Champions League appearances – which could undoubtedly see him take Farke’s men to the next level.

The 26-year-old could prove to be a versatile option for the Whites boss – just as Summerville was – with the forward able to play off the left-hand side, or even in the pocket behind the centre-forward.

£35m for a player of his calibre could prove to be an excellent addition for Leeds this summer, as they finally attempt to land their transfer target after 12 months of trying.

Should he get anywhere near the level of the Dutchman in Yorkshire, there’s no denying he will become a fan-favourite and one who could lead the club into the top half of the table next term.
