It felt like one setback after another a year ago for Tottenham Hotspur, even after the highs of winning the Europa League under Ange Postecoglou’s watch.
One by one, a string of top targets all went elsewhere, with Eberechi Eze joining Arsenal and Bryan Mbeumo moving to Manchester United, all while a deal for Morgan Gibbs-White fell flat.
Rivals mocked those transfer failures, but no one’s laughing now, with the Lilywhites beating Manchester City to the punch for Sandro Tonali, after previously powering past Man United in the pursuit of Mateus Fernandes.
There’s an excitement brewing at N17, a feeling that anything is possible again, not least on the transfer front. Might Morgan Rogers be next on the agenda?
Why Morgan Rogers should be Tottenham’s next priority
The focus seems to be on Bournemouth’s Eli Junior Kroupi right now, although there have been whispers that Spurs could enter the race for Rogers too, even with Arsenal leading the charge at present.
There’s so many factors at play, including the Gunners’ parallel pursuit of Julian Alvarez, with it difficult to rule out anything this summer after the statement captures of Tonali and Fernandes.
If Rogers isn’t to be Emirates-bound, then bringing him to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium would be such a coup, the 23-year-old having been such a talismanic figure back at Aston Villa.
Signed from Middlesbrough in January 2024, the England international is already being valued at above £100m, after racking up 60 goals and assists in 125 games at Villa Park.
He’s powerful and dynamic, such a threat both when cutting in off the left and when operating centrally. Indeed, in the Premier League last term, Rogers scored and assisted 16 goals, while creating 13 ‘big chances’.
Only Richarlison came close in terms of goal involvements (15) among the Spurs crop, while no player reached double figures for ‘big chances’ created, as Pedro Porro led the way on eight.
A clear, Premier League-proven upgrade Rogers would be on Roberto De Zerbi’s forward line, with it seemingly a similar story for another leading Tottenham target.
Spurs keen to sign Morgan Rogers 2.0 from Premier League rival
As stated, it is Arsenal who are expected to win the race for the Villa and England man as things stand, with interest set to ramp up when the World Cup concludes.
Spurs do have the aforementioned Kroupi on their attacking shortlist too, with the Frenchman said to be keen to join, although there are other Premier League targets to consider.
As noted by talkSPORT’s Alex Crook – writing in his transfer notebook – the north Londoners are still targeting a deal for Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo, even with the Reds currently not willing to sell the Dutchman.
Several clubs are said to be showing interest in the 27-year-old, although as things stands, his future may still remain at Anfield.
If not, a £60m price tag has been mooted previously, with Gakpo fresh from a fine World Cup on an individual basis, having scored three goals and registered one assist in his four tournament outings.

He’s so often a man for the big occasion for his country, even while not necessarily a star back on Merseyside, with a change of scenery potentially what is needed for his talents to truly shine.
That’s not to say the former PSV Eindhoven man hasn’t been an asset in a Liverpool shirt, notably scoring and assisting 14 goals in the title-winning 2024/25 campaign.
He followed that up with a further 12 goal involvements this time around, while he’s created 21 ‘big chances’ across the last two seasons, averaging 1.1 key passes per game in 2024/25, alongside 1.5 per game in 2024/26.
For comparison, that record isn’t too dissimilar to Rogers’ own return at Villa, the younger man racking up 34 goal involvements since the start of 2024/25, while just ahead in terms of ‘big chances’ created (29).
As for key passes, Rogers averaged 1.3 last term and 1.4 the year prior.
Both men, evidently, boast a stellar end product, be it in terms of goals or assists, the pair real creative outlets, whether it be operating as a left-winger or in a more central role – in Gakpo’s case as a false nine rather than a number ten.
Like Rogers, Gakpo is another elegant, eye-catching forward who thrives in that left channel, someone who can drag his side forward from deep, while boasting the quality to produce something spectacular, as seen in his array of whipped finishes into the far corner.
He’s been a polarising figure at times on Merseyside, yet at his best he’s looked like a “monster” in the Liverpool forward line, in the view of journalist Declan Carr, with there no reason why De Zerbi can’t get the best out of him next season.
If Rogers is unattainable, then Gakpo appears a perfect alternative, with the Liverpool man featuring on the list of the top 20 most similar players to Rogers in Europe’s top seven leagues last season, as per Scout Lab.
That’s certainly a promising sign, with it now a case of watching and waiting to see if Liverpool will cash in at some stage this summer.
