Scott Cross landed his first class of 2027 pledge Tuesday evening. Kamari Whyte, the No. 94 overall recruit in the national senior class, committed to Georgia Tech, he told 247Sports.
A 6-foot-3 guard out of Blairstown (N.J.) Blair Academy, Whyte chose the Yellow Jackets after completing official visits to Georgia Tech and Marquette this summer.
“As soon as they saw me play in Indiana, they loved me from there on out,” Whyte said. “They communicated with me better than any school I talked to. They were quick to get me on a visit, and everything about the school made me want to go there. The coaching staff came from Troy, and I believe they are going to turn Georgia Tech into a winning program. I want to be a part of that and help them win more.”
We have previously identified Whyte as a prospect with a college-ready frame, and the Georgia Tech staff shares that belief. They view him as a high school addition capable of making an immediate impact from Day 1.
“They definitely talked about me coming in as a freshman to play a lot of minutes,” Whyte said. “They want me to be the potential draft pick they see. Their team plays at a fast pace. I watched Troy, and they let their guards do whatever they want while playing fast. That’s the type of program I want to be at.”
With Whyte on board, Cross has secured a four-star recruit who helped lead New Heights to the adidas 3SSB championship this summer. When asked what he plans to bring to the program, Whyte pointed to his ability to impact the game on the defensive end of the floor.
“They are getting a defensive dog,” Whyte said. “I really take pride in defense. That’s where my offense comes from. I’m also somebody who wants to win. I’m hoping to help turn Georgia Tech around when I come in as a freshman, and I want to make an impact as a leader.”
