£6m star looks keen to join Rangers after Yokota

Good things never last, do they? Well, that’s how it feels with regard to Glasgow Rangers‘ key men of recent years.

Indeed, some of the best and brightest talents at Ibrox of late have only enjoyed fleeting relationships with the club, the latest of which having been teen sensation, Mikey Moore.

The 18-year-old – who now looks set to join FC Köln on a temporary basis – joins the likes of Vaclav Cerny, Abdallah Sima and Malik Tillman in having only lit up proceedings for a solitary season on loan.

It was a similar story too with regard to Hamza Igamane, albeit with the young Moroccan at least sold on for profit after just 12 months in Glasgow. That’s the type of business the Gers need to enjoy more of.

Why Igamane was the perfect signing for the Rangers model

The core of Derek McInnes’ business this summer has felt a little safe and solid, the club not exactly pushing the boat out when signing the likes of Ross McCrorie, Cammy Devlin and Dan Neil, alongside Lawrence Shankland.

Perhaps there is more to be excited by regarding the captures of Vanja Dragojevic, Olwethu Makhanya and Daisuke Yokota, the latter joining from Hannover for a fee of around £2.7m.

Whether any can get close to the kind of impact Igamane produced remains to be seen, the fleet-footed forward proving such a bargain following his £1.7m arrival from AS FAR Rabat.

The shining light of 2024/25, alongside Cerny, Igamane seemingly came from nowhere to emerge as a central figure at Ibrox, ending that season with 16 goals in all competitions.

After a slow start, he exploded on that night against Nice, while memorably bagging a late winner against Celtic to only enhance his burgeoning reputation.

Of course, things began to sour soon after, culminating in his refusal to feature on the bench at the start of last season, but it’s difficult to argue with what was a successful deal all around.

Indeed, selling the 23-year-old on for a £10.4m fee is certainly a tidy profit, with the Light Blues needing more where that came from this summer.

The Gers did at least react quickly after Friday’s frustrating draw at Tannadice by bringing Yokota into the building, the Japanese winger hopefully set to be a solution on that troublesome right flank.

McInnes, as he stressed last weekend, needs more, however, with further arrivals required, particularly amid the news that Youssef Chermiti could be on his way.

One name that has been mooted is PSV Eindhoven’s Couhaib Driouech, with Dutch outlet Voetbul International reporting that talks have been held regarding a deal for the 24-year-old.

The two clubs ‘intend to reach an agreement’, as per the report, and are ‘formally negotiating a transfer’, with a ‘long-term contract’ on the table at Ibrox.

Driouech – who could fetch around £6m – does appear to be keen to make the move, only heightening the possibility that Rangers can secure what would be seen as a coup.

The Moroccan might well prove to be the club’s most exciting talent since Igamane, someone who can breathe new life into this stuttering forward line.

Now, that comparison to Igamane is not based on their shared nationality alone, far from it, with Driouech another eye-catching, fleet-footed forward who makes the difference in the final third.

Unlike Igamane, he does primarily operate off the left flank at PSV, although that hasn’t necessarily hampered his end product, having ended last season with ten goals and assists to his name in the Eredivisie.

He also created seven ‘big chances’, even while only starting five league games, only just behind Igamane’s record of 11 ‘big chances’ created from 23 starts in 2024/25.

Where Driouech has perhaps flourished most notably, like Igamane, is in European action, having scored and assisted five goals in the Champions League in 2025/26, two of which came against Liverpool at Anfield.

It was on the continent where Igamane’s best work arguably came in his sole season at Ibrox, the now Lille starlet also scoring and assisting five goals during Rangers’ Europa League run.

The left-winger is more likely to hug the touchline than Igamane, who was more of a roaming striker in Glasgow, but that is perhaps what the Gers need right now, with both Ryan Naderi and Djeidi Gassama hooked at the break in last week’s draw with Dundee United.

McInnes’ current wide options just aren’t cutting it, with this team in need of a fresh injection of genuine quality and dynamism.
