SMU Mustangs quarterback Kevin Jennings is a tough dude.
He played much of the 2025 season with an ankle injury that would just never go away. It was certainly of the “nagging” variety, but Jennings never missed a game for the Mustangs. With that in mind, why would a finger injury hold him out?
The short answer is that it won’t. SMU head football coach Rhett Lashlee told the media earlier this week that Jennings hasn’t been throwing yet at camp due to an injury to his right index finger. Interestingly enough, it wasn’t even a football injury that limited Jennings.
“After our first night of practice, in the locker room, was leaving (through) a door and someone was coming in, and (the door) got pushed and smashed the tip of his finger,” Lashlee explained, per PonyFans.com. There’s no issues — it’s just a really bad jam.”
Lashlee said the Mustangs might let Jennings take a week or two to recuperate, but the expectation was that he’d be ready to go for the first game of the season. That’s on Sept. 7 against Florida State in Tallahassee.
Kevin Jennings reportedly ahead of schedule coming back from finger injury
That’s a huge game for SMU, so the more practice Jennings gets, the better. The good news for the Mustangs is that on Thursday, Brett McMurphy of On3 reported that the quarterback is ahead of schedule in his recovery.
