Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace have developed one of the Premier League’s most unlikely rivalries, with a European argument now followed by a High Court battle involving Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis.

The bad blood can be traced back to last summer.

Palace qualified for the Europa League by winning the FA Cup, but UEFA ruled that their links with Lyon through John Textor breached its multi-club ownership regulations.

Lyon kept their place because of their higher domestic finish, while Palace were dropped into the Conference League.

Forest, who had originally qualified for that competition after finishing seventh, were promoted into Palace’s Europa League position. The south London club appealed, but the Court of Arbitration for Sport supported UEFA’s decision.

Palace felt they had been unfairly punished despite Textor agreeing to sell his shares. Forest subsequently became an obvious target for angry supporters after raising concerns with European football’s governing body.

Those tensions exploded when the clubs met at Selhurst Park in August 2025.

Evangelos Marinakis

Palace supporters displayed a banner depicting Marinakis pointing a gun towards Morgan Gibbs-White. It also referred to serious criminal allegations which the Greek businessman has consistently denied.

The FA later fined Palace £50,000 for failing to prevent the display.

The row has not disappeared. Marinakis has now filed defamation proceedings at the High Court against Palace and unidentified individuals connected to the banner.

Palace have not publicly addressed the action, but the case ensures relations between the clubs remain deeply uncomfortable.

A general view of City Ground ahead of the Premier League match Nottingham Forest vs Crystal Palace

Palace went on to win the Conference League while Forest reached the Europa League semi-finals, meaning both clubs ultimately enjoyed strong campaigns. Even so, neither success repaired the damage caused by the original dispute.

Despite that poisonous backdrop, Forest could attempt to buy one of Palace’s most important players, following reports that Oliver Glasner is personally keen on the idea.

Colombian journalist Pipe Sierra reports that the Eagles are prepared to consider offers of around £25 million for Daniel Muñoz.

Forest have apparently contacted Palace to discover what would be required to complete a deal.

A City Ground switch would reunite Muñoz with Glasner, whose wing-back system gave the Colombian freedom to attack the penalty area without reducing his defensive workload.

Muñoz delivered four goals and three assists in 29 Premier League games last season, finishing the campaign with five goals and seven assists from 46 appearances across all competitions as Palace conquered Europe.

The 30-year-old is out of contract in just under two years, but his age would limit Forest’s future resale value, though £25m would buy them a proven Premier League performer who already understands Glasner’s methods.

Forest must also decide whether dealing directly with Palace is realistic while Marinakis pursues legal action against the club.

Football often produces strange alliances, but this would be one of the summer’s most awkward transfers.
