Crystal Palace have made an approach to sign Santiago Bueno, with the defender now certain to leave Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer transfer window.
Palace looking to raid already-relegated Wolves for Bueno
With Wolves’ relegation from the Premier League being confirmed earlier this month, it could be difficult for Rob Edwards to keep hold of some of his key players this summer, and losing Bueno may be a real blow, with the manager praising the centre-back in February.
After a 1-0 FA Cup victory against Grimsby Town in February, in which the defender scored the only goal, Edwards said: “He’s been playing really well. Santi is someone who is really growing on me. He goes about his business, he’s unassuming, very quiet, but a quiet leader. He’s been playing very well for us, and he’s helped us to two clean sheets in a row.
“He’s been good and he’s got the all-important goal today, and an amazing tackle right at the end as well. He’s just a good footballer and he showed up today. I really like him and it’s too early to speak about things like that [Bueno being with the squad next season] now, but I do really like Santi Bueno.”
After spending time on the bench earlier this season, the 27-year-old has since established himself as a key player for the Old Gold, starting the last 15 Premier League matches.
However, according to a report from Sport Witness, Bueno is certain to leave Wolves in the summer, as he has no desire to play in the Championship, and Premier League clubs are starting to line up to secure his signature.
Indeed, Crystal Palace, Leeds United, West Ham United and Brentford have all made contact about a deal for the Uruguay international, who earns £40k-a-week at Molineux.
Sport Witness aren’t sure what sort of fee Wolves are looking to receive, or who is leading the race as things stand, but Palace’s interest certainly makes sense, having lost former captain Marc Guehi to Manchester City in the January transfer window.
However, Oliver Glasner‘s replacement may want a say in the summer recruitment, and it still remains unclear who is going to replace the Austrian in the Selhurst Park dugout.
The latest on Crystal Palace’s manager search
AFC Bournemouth moved swiftly to appoint Marco Rose, after Andoni Iraola announced he is leaving at the end of the season, but Steve Parish & co still have a number of candidates under consideration.
Iraola and Coventry City boss Frank Lampard are among the options, alongside former Sporting CP and Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim, and ex-Eintracht Frankfurt chief Dino Toppmoller.
Crystal Palace extremely keen on rising manager Arteta said is “unbelievable”
The Eagles are preparing for the departure of Oliver Glasner.
With Chelsea deciding to part ways with Liam Rosenior, after just 106 days in charge, the Eagles’ Premier League rivals are also searching for a new manager ahead of the summer, and Glasner is one of the options under consideration.
