Glasgow Rangers had their title hopes virtually ended when they were beaten 2-1 by Hearts in the Scottish Premiership at Tynecastle on Monday evening.

The Light Blues took the lead through Dujon Sterling in the first half and kept the lead until the break, before goals from Stephen Kingsley and Lawrence Shankland secured all three points for the hosts.

Danny Rohl‘s side are now seven points adrift of Hearts in the table with three matches left to play, which means that it would take an extraordinary collapse from the league leaders for the Gers to have a chance of winning the division.

A win for the Light Blues would have taken them to within one point of both Hearts and Celtic, giving them a real chance to push for their first title since 2021 in the remaining three games.

Instead, they returned to Glasgow with nothing to show from their efforts against the league leaders, losing at Tynecastle for the second time under Rohl.

How key reason Rangers lost the game against Hearts

The key reason why the Light Blues ended up losing the game against Hearts was that they took their foot off the gas after going 1-0 up through Sterling.

Instead of pushing hard to make it 2-0, the team dropped deeper and invited pressure onto themselves, which Hearts took advantage of with their two goals in the second half.

It was the exact same problem that Rangers had after they went 2-0 up against Celtic at Ibrox and ended up drawing the game 2-2, as they allowed the Hoops back into the match in the second 45 by dropping back.

Given that it has now happened multiple times in big matches, it appears to be an issue with the mentality and tactics that Rohl deploys, with a clear focus on protecting what they have when they go in front, rather than being ruthless.

The blame cannot solely be placed at the manager’s feet, though, because several players also underperformed and did not do enough as individuals.

The Ibrox forward who must never play for Rangers again

Now that the season is virtually over for the Gers, one of the underperforming forwards from the defeat to Hearts must not play another game for the club.

Andreas Skov Olsen, who was given a 3/10 player rating, must have played his final match for the Gers because he delivered a dismal display and is only on loan from Wolfsburg until the end of the season.

Rangers have an option to make the deal permanent in the summer transfer window, but his form has not been good enough to suggest that they are going to activate it.

The Danish winger ended the game with even fewer touches than goalkeeper Jack Butland (40), which speaks to his lack of impact in possession, and he failed to create a single chance for his teammates in just shy of 70 minutes on the pitch.

It was not only his play on the ball that left a lot to be desired, though, as he also fell asleep at the back post and allowed his man, Kingsley, to score on the rebound to equalise in the second half.

Skov Olsen has now scored one goal in nine appearances in the Premiership for the Light Blues since his move from Wolfsburg during the January transfer window, which is far from an impressive haul for a wide player.

Tochi Chukwuani, a defensive midfielder, has scored more goals (two) than his compatriot, which speaks to just how ineffective the loan winger has been for the Scottish giants.

With all of this in mind, Rohl must not play Skov Olsen in another game this season because the last three matches should be about preparing for the 2026/27 campaign, knowing that their title hopes are all-but-over.

Rangers should send the Dane back to Wolfsburg in the summer, as he has not done enough to earn a permanent deal, and that means that he will not be part of the future at Ibrox, hence why the forward must not play another minute in the next few weeks.
