Ibrox officials now want Rangers to re-hire 4-3-3 manager

Glasgow Rangers officially had their title hopes ended with a 3-1 defeat to their city rivals in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday afternoon.

The Light Blues took the lead through Mikey Moore early on in the match, but they lost control of the game and were too open defensively as they went on to concede three goals.

Rangers have now conceded two or more goals in eight of their last nine matches in the Premiership, which illustrates how weak they have been at the back in recent weeks.

This defeat to Celtic is the first time Rangers have gone in front at Parkhead and lost since November 1988, and the first time a manager has lost three successive league games for the club since Dick Advocaat since 2000.

As much as Danny Rohl may argue that decisions did not go in his favour, there is now a conversation to be had over his future in the dugout at Ibrox.

Rangers discussing move for title-winning manager

There is already work going on behind the scenes to potentially replace the German head coach at the end of the season, although no final decision has been made on his position.

The Light Blues are reportedly looking at a former Premiership title-winning manager to come in and replace Rohl if they decide to make a change in the dugout.

According to journalist Alan Nixon, via his Patreon, Glasgow Rangers are considering a move to bring Steven Gerrard back to Ibrox at the end of the 2025/26 campaign.

The reporter claims that there are whispers at Ibrox among high ranking officials who still admire the English coach and would like to appoint him for a second time.

Nixon reveals that Burnley, who will be in the Championship next season, are also interested in hiring Gerrard, but Rangers are discussing a move to challenge them to his signature.

It now remains to be seen whether or not the Ibrox board will opt to relieve Rohl of his duties after less than a full season in charge of the Scottish giants.

How Steven Gerrard would be an upgrade on Danny Rohl

The former Sheffield Wednesday head coach did well to get the Light Blues back into the title race after Russell Martin’s time in charge at the start of the season, but the way the campaign has unravelled is cause for concern.

In the biggest games against the best opponents, the German tactician has failed to set his team up effectively, losing twice to Hearts, losing to Motherwell, and winning one of his five matches against Celtic.

Rohl, who has not won a single trophy as a first-team manager, has been undone by the managers of the other top teams, hence the club’s poor results against the top four teams in the division.

Gerrard, who won the Premiership title in the 2020/21 campaign, showed during his time at Ibrox that he could compete against the best managers and the best teams in Scotland.

The 4-3-3 tactician won seven of his 12 meetings with Celtic, losing four times, and averaged 1.83 points per game against the Hoops, whilst he also averaged 2.00 points per game against Hearts and 2.40 points per match against Motherwell.

Gerrard is a proven Premiership and Rangers manager who knows how to handle the big occasions, possibly due to his illustrious career as a player for Liverpool, and Rohl is yet to show that he can do the same.

If the Light Blues want to get back to winning trophies and league titles, they need a manager who can handle the pressure of the big games and set their team up to win them consistently.

The Scottish giants already know that Gerrard can do that, whilst Rohl’s first season at the club suggests that he struggles with that part of the job, which may be the most important part of it.

Therefore, the Ibrox chiefs should turn their whispers into formal talks with the ex-Aston Villa boss to bring him back as an upgrade on Rohl ahead of next season.
