Rangers could see bid accepted for £10m striker

Youssef Chermiti had an interesting first season with Glasgow Rangers after his £8m transfer from Premier League side Everton last summer.

The Portuguese striker only scored two goals in the first half of the campaign for the Scottish giants and was looking like a big-money flop for the first few months.

However, he then scored 13 of his 15 goals in the Scottish Premiership in the second-half of the season, including hat-tricks against Hearts and Falkirk.

Despite that impressive end to the campaign, which included two hat-tricks, the Portugal U21 international ended the season with more ‘big chances’ missed (23) than goals (15) in all competitions.

The Gers signed Ryan Naderi from Hansa Rostock in Germany to add more firepower alongside Chermiti, and he scored one goal and missed five ‘big chances’ in nine league games.

Chermiti, who scored a hat-trick on the final day against Falkirk, and Naderi are both yet to prove that they can be clinical strikers who rarely miss ‘big chances’ in front of goal for the Ibrox giants.

That may be why Danny Rohl and the recruitment team are reportedly looking at a number nine who would arrive in Glasgow as an upgrade on both of them if they can get a deal over the line.

According to TEAMtalk, Glasgow Rangers are one of a number of clubs interested in a deal to sign Leeds United centre-forward Joel Piroe in the upcoming summer transfer window.

The report claims that the Premier League side are due to demand a fee of between £8m and £10m for the Suriname international, which means that the Gers could have a bid accepted for a similar price to what they paid for Chermiti.

They are not alone in their interest in the left-footed star, though, as Middlesbrough, Stoke City, and Birmingham City are also said to be keen on bringing the attacker back down to the Championship.

TEAMtalk adds that Rohl believes that Piroe has the quality to solve his team’s goalscoring issues, but it remains to be seen whether or not the Light Blues will now formalise their interest with a tangible offer.

As aforementioned, Naderi and Chermiti have not been consistently clinical enough in the Premiership for the Gers, missing 28 ‘big chances’ between them in all competitions this season.

Piroe’s record in the Championship for Leeds and Swansea in recent seasons suggests that he would not face similar issues in Scotland, because he is a clinical centre-forward who rarely passes up an opportunity to find the back of the net.

The sample size from the 2025/26 campaign is too small to draw any conclusions from, as he only started two Premier League games, but his statistics in the previous four campaigns paint a pretty clear picture.

Piroe, who was hailed as “clinical” by journalist Josh Bunting, is an incredibly efficient finisher and rarely misses a ‘big chance’ to find the back of the net, with 21 more goals than ‘big chances’ missed in the past five seasons.

The Leeds striker, who won the Golden Boot in the Championship in the 2024/25 campaign, has found himself behind Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha in the pecking order at Elland Road, but there is little shame in that because they combined for 20 Premier League goals.

Piroe scored more goals in his last Championship season than Chermiti and Naderi have ever scored in a season in their senior careers, whilst doing so with exceptionally clinical finishing.

The 26-year-old striker, who scored 73 goals from 60.23 xG in the Championship, would arrive at Ibrox as an upgrade on both of Rohl’s striker options because of his proven ability to score goals reliably and consistently.

TEAMtalk’s report claims that Rohl views Piroe as the answer to his team’s goalscoring woes and the statistics clearly back that up, as he looks far better than Naderi and Chermiti in front of goal.

Therefore, the Dutch-born star looks like an ideal signing for the Scottish giants if they want a clinical striker who can play between the width of the penalty box and sniff out chances to score.

Piroe would be perfect for games against low blocks when Rangers need a player to stay in the box and finish off the chances that they create, which is why they should push to get a deal done in the coming weeks and months.
