Liverpool are now stepping up their move for a “breathless” star, having made contact ahead of the summer transfer window.
Arne Slot only eyeing “one or two signings” despite disappointing campaign
The Reds just about managed to get over the line in their quest to secure Champions League qualification, after drawing 1-1 at home against Brentford on the final day, in what was Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson’s final game for the club.
However, despite a difficult campaign, Arne Slot remains keen to work with his existing options, and isn’t predicting wholesale changes.
“It should not all be about the one or two players we might bring in. It’s also definitely about evolving the ones we brought in last season and the ones we already have longer.
“And I think there’s a lot to be won for us to win in things we can improve compared to this season. And one of the things, of course, is having players available. But the second thing, we have to do better defensively and offensively.
“And hopefully signing one or two players can even accelerate that evolvement.”
As pointed out by Slot, the defensive record must improve next season, off the back of shipping 53 Premier League goals, which is their highest total since the 1993-94 season, and their worst record in a 38-game season.
With Jeremie Frimpong struggling to make an impact in his debut campaign, having been forced to deal with a number of injuries, FSG are keen on bringing in a new right-back this summer.
According to a report from FC Inter News (via Sport Witness), Liverpool have now made an approach to sign Inter Milan star Denzel Dumfries, who has a €25m (£22m) release clause in his contract, which makes him an ‘attractive’ option.
Dumfries, who was nominated for the 2025 Ballon d’Or award and finished in 25th place, is set to take part in the World Cup with the Netherlands before making a decision about his future.
However, the full-back’s agent is keen to secure a move to the Premier League, which gives the Reds an advantage over rival suitors FC Barcelona.
The Dutchman caught Micah Ricahards‘ eye during the previous World Cup out in Qatar, with the pundit saying after the Netherlands’ 3-1 round of 16 victory against the USMNT: “Denzel Dumfries. What a player he is.
“I just thought his whole game was brilliant. It was his timing of his runs… He didn’t sort of mix it up too much but when he did it was the right moments. Down this right-hand side he was just breathless.”
At club level, Dumfries has since remained a key player for Inter, who recently lifted the league title, with the 30-year-old regularly providing goals and assists in the Serie A.
