For once, it’s Manchester United who look like the settled, organised outfit, with the club’s Premier League rivals undergoing so much managerial upheaval.
Xabi Alonso is in the door at Chelsea, after the failed Liam Rosenior experiment. Former Blues boss, Enzo Maresca, is set to replace the departing Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. At Tottenham Hotspur, meanwhile, Roberto De Zerbi was only recently brought in as the club’s fourth manager in less than 12 months.
And then there’s Liverpool, a year on from claiming just a second league title in the Premier League era, the man at the helm, Arne Slot, has been shown the door, the key casualty of a turbulent season on Merseyside.
That should well be a lesson to Michael Carrick as to just how swiftly things can change. Right now, the Englishman is riding high following a stunning first six months in charge, but as Slot’s departure showcases, there’s little room for sentimentality or patience at the elite level.
Carrick needs a strong start to next season, something that would likely be aided by significant summer investment. A new number nine, anyone?
Man Utd lining up dream move to sign Zirkzee replacement
Fabrizio Romano revealed, and then hastily deleted, the news that Benjamin Sesko is set to be handed United’s number nine shirt next term, following Rasmus Hojlund’s permanent exit to Napoli.
Romano jumped the gun, and perhaps so too have United by seemingly awarding the Slovenian that upgrade, not least with a more marquee striker potentially on the summer shortlist.
As reported by CaughtOffside, Joshua Zirkzee is facing an uncertain future at Old Trafford following another muted season for the Dutchman, the 24-year-old tipped for a return to Serie A just two years on from his arrival from Bologna.
That perhaps inevitable exit may well spark the need to invest in a high-profile replacement, with the report outlining that the club have drawn up a five-man list of targets.
The ‘dream’ option, as per the report, is said to be Galatasaray’s Victor Osimhen, the Nigerian having long been linked with a Premier League move, after previously firing Napoli to a first Scudetto in 2022/23.
The 26-year-old only made the permanent move to Turkey last summer, although he feels overdue for a move to a truly elite club in Europe’s top five leagues.
Osimhen could be Man Utd’s best striker signing in years
There have been a multitude of reasons behind United’s decline over the past decade or so, yet the lack of a genuinely world-class, consistent forward is prime among them.

Not since Robin van Persie in 2012/13 has any player hit 20 league goals or more at Old Trafford, albeit while even the Dutchman proved something of a one-season wonder, in truth.
The club have flitted between short-term moves for the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Edinson Cavani and Cristiano Ronaldo, expensive, long-term deals for Zirkzee, Hojlund and Sesko, as well as more bizarre, temporary moves for the likes of Wout Weghorst and Odion Ighalo.
Acquiring a player truly in their prime has been overlooked for too long now, hence why Osimhen could be such a difference-maker. He is, after all, “one of the best strikers in the world“, in the view of compatriot Peter Etebo.
That status isn’t without its merit, the Galatasaray man having proven prolific at almost every club and country he’s operated in, excluding a brief goalless stint at Wolfsburg.
20 in 36 for Belgian side Charleroi, 18 in 38 for Lille. 76 in just 133 in Naples. And now, 59 in his first 74 appearances in Turkey.
Neither Hojlund, Zirkzee or Sesko boast a backstory anywhere close to that level, with the latter man scoring 39 in 87 games for RB Leipzig, as well as just 29 in 79 for Red Bull Salzburg.
Of course, it must be said that Sesko has enjoyed a promising debut season in English football, following his £74m arrival, the 22-year-old netting 12 times in all competitions, 11 of which came in the Premier League.
That tally was still well below what Osimhen achieved, however, the Lagos-born star netting 22 times across all fronts, 15 of which came in the Super Lig and seven of which came in the Champions League.
Whatever competition, whatever level, Osimhen appears to deliver. Injury has been an issue at times, but his record speaks for itself.
He’s notched ten in 15 games in the Europa League, alongside 16 in just 27 Champions League games. He’s netted 41 goals in just 54 Super Lig games, after bagging 65 in 108 Serie A games.
In an age where prolific centre-forwards have largely become something of a dying breed, he remains a truly proven performer, a throwback striker who can win games on his own.
Sesko, at 22, is still young and improving, but heading into 2026/27, the moment could be there for United and Carrick to pounce on the uncertainty of their rivals and make a move at the summit.
As the CaughtOffside report noted, Osimhen ‘looks like the type of striker who could turn United into genuine title challengers’. He’s the player Old Trafford has been waiting for.
