Rangers are now chasing their second signing of the summer and have made contact with a midfield star, who could arrive in a bargain deal.
Rangers make first move to sign midfielder
The Gers have already sealed and welcomed the arrival of Lawrence Shankland in a major sign of intent, but that must only be the start. Danny Rohl‘s side showed plenty of promise this season, but ultimately finished third and simply have to get back to winning silverware in the next campaign.
They’ve already weakened Hearts in pursuit of that and now they’ve got the task of building a side capable of beating Celtic to the Scottish throne.
Gassama will love him: £3m star now really wants to sign for Rangers
This reported Rangers transfer target is interested in a move to Ibrox in the summer window.
A number of transfer targets have already emerged as a result, including Luke Graham. The Dundee centre-back enjoyed an excellent campaign and is one of the best young defenders around in the Scottish Premiership. It’s no surprise that the Gers are sniffing around.
The same, meanwhile, can be said about a former Premier League player. According to Alan Nixon, as relayed by Inside Futbol, Rangers are in ongoing talks to sign Dan Neil, who is set to become a free agent this summer.
The midfielder is reportedly open to the idea of a move to Ibrox ahead of next season and would be an undeniable bargain for the 49ers. Alas, with Coventry City also racing to secure his signature, there’s no guarantee that Rangers turn talks into a signed and sealed contract.
Their interest stems from the January transfer window, when it was Ipswich Town who swooped in ahead to land a loan move. Now, months later, the Gers could finally get their man.
Rangers should push to sign Dan Neil
Given that he’s available as a free agent, there is now down side to signing Neil this summer. Whilst Rangers have previously been scarred by stars across English football, the addition of the midfielder would ease any concerns over Nicolas Raskin’s future and hand Rohl an impressive potential replacement.
Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris, despite phasing Neil out of his side, was full of praise for his former captain at the start of his tenure – telling reporters: “He’s very clever, very important to adjust the formation and balance the team.
“At the end, the individual output is maybe not as huge as expected but is very important for the team. Now that job is done he can add more things like more forward passes, tackling, counter pressing, and you can see how strong he is as an individual player.”
To swoop in and sign Shankland and then Neil without making a dent in their budget would be an act of genius from the 49ers at the start of a crucial summer of business.
