Ange Postecoglou summed up Tottenham Hotspur‘s interminable struggles during the 2024/25 season. “Every time I’ve seen the light at the end of the tunnel, it’s usually been an oncoming train.”

Ange also told reporters that he tends to win silverware during his second seasons in charge of clubs, and he certainly put his money where his mouth is.

Now, one year after the Australian was sacked, any light that ENIC Group thought they saw gave way to all-consuming darkness, but Roberto De Zerbi managed to steer Spurs away from the Premier League relegation zone and secure survival on the final game of the season, so perhaps the Londoners truly have now emerged from that tunnel.

However, Tottenham need to make some changes. Sure, their injury problems have been absurd, but there is still so much else to be desired, and while much of the noise is coming from defensive and attacking areas, it is the midfield that will make or break the De Zerbi era.

Spurs desperate to sign Premier League midfielder

With transfers for Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi wrapped up, Tottenham are now turning toward the frontline – albeit with ENIC still working to sign Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton.

Negotiations continue with Manchester City over a £60m move for Savinho, but the De Zerbi resurgence was built on robust midfield play, and it’s clear that Spurs could do with another dimension there.

According to transfer reporter Ben Jacobs, Tottenham “really like” Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott this summer, though Manchester United and Liverpool are also in the race.

Valued at £80m by Bournemouth, the England international, 22, is quickly emerging as one of the Premier League’s most coveted young stars.

Scott’s future at the Vitality Stadium is in jeopardy following Andoni Iraola’s departure, and while Tottenham are unable to offer European football,

Alex Scott could be Spurs’ next Dele Alli

Described as a “special talent” by Cherries teammate Lewis Cook, there is a reason that so many top suitors are interested. This is one of the most talented, all-action midfielders in the Premier League, someone who could charge a title-challenging midfield.

He established himself as one of Iraola’s key cogs in the middle of the park, defending with tenacity and bringing a cultured, creative element to the midfield that Spurs perhaps don’t have.

In that, he could establish himself as De Zerbi’s own Dele, someone who ploughs past opponents and into the danger area, there creating goals or finding space to strike at the net himself.

Of course, there is also the EFL connection, another parallel between the two. Scott made his name known for Bristol City over three years ago, starring during an FA Cup defeat against Manchester City. So silky, so stylish.

Scott is intrinsically more progressive than someone like Bentancur, and in that, he has the potential to assume a Dele-esque role in De Zerbi’s line-up. Say with James Maddison bringing more natural playmaking, the Eriksen to his Alli.

Could Tottenham dynamise their midfield by signing Scott? It certainly feels like the Londoners could do with his flair and energy, capable of startling bursts of recovery pace, remarkable sharpness to bypass opponents and through on goal.

Alli was always startlingly intelligent throughout his Spurs prime; he could do no wrong in the box, clinical and timing his runs to perfection.

Dele Alli Spurs record (timeless)-1

Scott is not the same from a tactical standpoint. He is more complete and measured in his play, happy to operate deeper berths as well as sitting as a ten, behind the centre-forward.

This terrific English talent has the world at his feet. He could be the real deal, and Tottenham need to throw the kitchen sink at his signature this summer.

If they fail to act, a Premier League rival will swoop in.
