The LA Kings like Scott Laughton, but he might test the market
Jason Gregor: Dennis Bernstein on Los Angeles Kings pending UFA Scott Laughton: “I think if DJ Smith was named head coach, he would have signed already. They still might sign him. I know he liked it here, but at this point I think he could test the market.”
Why are the Anaheim Ducks open to trading Mason McTavish?
NHL Watcher: Chris Johnston on The Chris Johnston Show on why the Anaheim Ducks are open to the idea of moving forward Mason McTavish: “I think some of the concerns or issues in Anaheim with him were, maybe a little bit of concern with his skating ability, his speed or lack thereof, he’s not always the most aware on the ice”

Montreal Canadiens musings
Eric Engels of Sportsnet: (mailbag) The odds are probably 50-50 that the Montreal Canadiens acquire a 2nd line center. It is their top priority, but free agency is thin, and it’s sellers’ market.
If the Canadiens are able to trade goaltender Sam Montembeault, it opens up more games for Jacob Fowler. Montembeault could end up being their third goalie if he isn’t traded.
Don’t think the Canadiens need to trade Kaiden Guhle in a package for a right-handed defenseman. There are some right-handed free agents, with Connor Murphy being one option. Yes, Guhle is on the third pair at $5.5 million, but the cap is going up and money isn’t an issue yet. He’s not untouchable, but moving him to fill a hole, may just be creating another hole.
Kirby Dach is owed a $4 million qualifying offer, and his future is uncertain. He could accept it, or reject it and go to arbitration. They could also look to move him. He has some value, but not sure kind of value that is.
Mason McTavish has been on the Canadiens radar. The 23-year-old carries a $7 million cap hit through 2031. He’s never scored less than 17 goals and 41 points. There are concerns about his skating and defensive game. Don’t believe he’s at the top of their list.
NHL Rumors: Vincent Trocheck, Mason McTavish, and Top Buyout Candidates
Think there is a greater chance that one of Adam Engstrom or David Reinbacher is traded over Arber Xhekaj or Jayden Struble.
Wingers Mason Marchment and Alexis Lafreniere would be interesting options for the Canadiens, but thinks that there are other teams that would outbid them.
