Tottenham have been strongly linked with a move for former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood this summer, but sources understand he is not a target and they are focused on other options in attack.
Greenwood worked with Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi at Marseille and a report in L’Equipe stated the Londoners were ready to make a move for the one-time England international.
De Zerbi’s arrival in north London in March was mired in controversy after his past comments and association with Greenwood, who faced charges of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm in 2022 before they were dropped.
The Crown Prosecution Service dropped the charges in February 2023 owing to “a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light” which meant there was “no realistic prospect of conviction”.
Greenwood, who denied the charges, subsequently resumed his career but left United and joined Marseille in 2024 under De Zerbi.
Upon his arrival at Tottenham, De Zerbi apologised for any offence his past comments on Greenwood being a “good guy” who had paid a “heavy price” had caused after three supporters groups were against the appointment.
De Zerbi was able to brush off a bumpy start and lead Spurs to Premier League safety after winning three of his seven fixtures in charge.
A dramatic final-day victory over Everton clinched survival and has earned De Zerbi plenty of credit in the bank ahead of this summer’s transfer window.
Fabrizio Romano: De Zerbi wants Liverpool target to lead Tottenham project
Liverpool and Tottenham are set for a tussle over the future of a highly sought after defender.
Tottenham have already acted fast since their close shave with relegation with free agents Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi signed and the £52million transfer of centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton secured, but Greenwood will not follow the trio to N17.
However, that does not mean the Lilywhites are not making efforts to improve their attacking ranks, with a new centre-forward signing expected this summer.
Spurs eyeing move for MLS star
According to reports in Spain, via Sport Witness, La Liga outfit Real Betis are now facing pressure from Tottenham in the race for FC Cincinnati striker Kévin Denkey.
Betis have been working on a deal for the 25 year-old and view him as their top target, with Cincinnati set to demand just €15m (£13m) for his signature this summer.
Denkey has a phenomenal goal record in recent years, scoring 66 times 152 games at Cercle Brugge before joining the American side, where he has bagged 31 goals in 51 games.
Betis want a ‘top class striker’, which they believe the Togo international can be, but with Spurs scouting him and more than capable of paying the £13m fee the La Liga club are now sweating.
Tottenham may see a cheap striker as the ideal solution while they figure out what to do with Richarlison and Dominic Solanke, and it would also allow them to splash out big on Newcastle star Sandro Tonali to improve their midfield.
Tonali’s agents shared an update on his future this week.
