Ambition, integrity and unity – three values which have been etched in Liverpool Football Club from the academy setup all the way up to the senior team.
Such descriptions are often the first things supporters will mention as to what they expect from any new player who walks through the door at Anfield.
The expectations of the Reds faithful will be just as lofty this summer, as Andoni Iraola looks to make his mark on the side ahead of his debut campaign at the helm in 2026/27.
He too demands a lot from his players – as seen during his recent spell as Bournemouth boss, where he gained a reputation for his intense pressing and heavy-metal attacking style.
It’s no surprise that the 44-year-old has already started to eye up numerous reinforcements in key areas of the squad to help him be the next manager adored by the supporters on Merseyside.
Liverpool agree personal terms to sign talented youngster
Iraola’s 4-2-3-1 system demands two top-quality ball-winners at the heart of his midfield, which has seen Borussia Dortmund star Felix Nmecha linked with a move to join the Reds.
It’s been reported over recent days that Liverpool have already reached out to the player’s representatives to gain information on what’s needed to secure his signature.
Manchester United are also firmly in the race for the 25-year-old star, who could cost at least £60m after his recent star performances at the ongoing World Cup.
The German isn’t the only Bundesliga player who’s become a key target for Iraola’s side, as RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande continues to be linked with a switch to Anfield.
According to Media Foot, Liverpool have now agreed personal terms with the Ivorian international ahead of a potential move to England in the near future.
The report also states that the 19-year-old is the club’s top attacking transfer target and they are willing to pay a small fortune to secure his signature ahead of Champions League holders, PSG.
His current employers have set his asking price at over the £100m mark, and whilst no fee has yet been agreed between the two clubs, it’s evident the player himself sees his future on Merseyside.
Why Diomande would be a bigger talent than Ngumoha for Liverpool
Whilst summer additions are needed at Anfield, there’s no disputing that there’s still a host of talent within the senior ranks, with teenager Rio Ngumoha potentially having a huge role to play under Iraola.
The 17-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough campaign on Merseyside last time, subsequently making 19 league appearances and managing to find the back of the net on two occasions.
His strikes against Newcastle United and Fulham showcase his quality within attacking areas – but there’s no denying he’s only going to get even better as he matures as a footballer.
The youngster’s tremendous form hasn’t gone unnoticed by others too, as Thomas Tuchel included Ngumoha as part of England’s squad for their training campaign prior to the World Cup.
His tender age may be a concern to many, but Iraola will have to manage expectations placed upon the attacker to allow him to continue his rapid development at Anfield.
However, his progress could stagnate during the 2026/27 campaign – especially if the Reds are able to reach a full agreement with RB Leipzig for Diomande in the weeks ahead.
The Ivorian would undoubtedly arrive on Merseyside as one of the club’s regular wide starters, which could see Ngumoha have to settle for impact minutes off the bench.
The 19-year-old enjoyed his own breakthrough season in the Bundesliga last term, subsequently producing numerous stats which blow those registered by the current Reds star out of the water.

Diomande, who’s been labelled “generational” by analyst Bence Bocsak, completed a staggering 4.3 successful dribbles per 90 – the most of any player in Germany’s top-flight.
The aforementioned tally is higher than the one produced by the Liverpool teenager, who often got fans off their seats with his fearless and relentless take-on attempts.
It’s not the only area the RB Leipzig star managed to dominate, as he also managed to put the finishing touches on his mazy runs – as seen by his tally of 12 league goals.
Such a figure is six times higher than that of the English superstar, which could arguably make the £100m transfer target a more rounded current option for Iraola.
Diomande also managed to create more chances for his teammates per 90, subsequently allowing those around him to further increase their own goalscoring tallies at Anfield.
There’s no disputing Ngumoha is an extremely exciting prospect and a player who will no doubt become a regular starter during the years ahead on Merseyside.
However, a move for Diomande could see him have to settle for impact minutes off the bench and learn his trade from the Ivorian international in the immediate future.
