The NHL continues to see massive action on Tuesday with multiple trades involving some pretty young up-and-coming players. It was the second Tuesday in a row when trades were going down across the NHL, as the free-agent crop is not the best. Let’s dive into the latest rumors involving some of the teams and players as more movement is expected.
Simon Nemec looks to stay in Calgary long term
The Calgary Flames acquired Simon Nemec from the New Jersey Devils. The 2nd overall pick from the 2022 NHL Draft was looking for a change of scenery. He gets that in Calgary, where he will be relied upon to play on the top pairing alongside Kevin Bahl.
Nemec is a restricted free agent and is open to signing a long-term deal with the Flames.
NHL Trades: Simon Nemec, William Eklund, and Jordan Kyrou
Eric Francis of Sportsnet: Nemec: “They gave up a lot for me and I would like to stay as long as I can. If I look at the group, it’s a good fit for me. (Conroy) told me to be in good shape for the big minutes and that’s obviously what you want. I will be ready for that. I didn’t ask for a trade but both sides kind of knew something had to happen.”
It will be interesting to see where the final length of the contract and dollar amount come in as he is a pending restricted free agent.
What will the San Jose Sharks do with the second overall pick?
The San Jose Sharks traded William Eklund, Kasper Halttunen, and the rights to prospect Brandon Svoboda to the Ottawa Senators for the 9th overall. Now the Sharks have two top-10 picks and are fielding calls for the second overall pick.
Curtis Pashelka: Sharks GM Mike Grier on other teams interest in their No. 2 draft slot: “There’s probably been, I would say, probably five teams that have been very consistently serious about it, and we’ve received a couple legitimate offers that we’ve had to really think through and have conversations about, and I expect that I’ll continue over the next three days.”
As NHLRumors.com reported, the second overall pick has been a subject of trade conversation for a while now. Many people think they will still trade for a defenseman. However, they could take Ivar Stenberg at two and a defenseman at nine. However, to move the pick, it must be for a player who can be on their roster long-term.
The Buffalo Sabres Trade Bowen Bryam to the Chicago Blackhawks
Max Miller: Grier: “It would have to make sense for us to move off the second overall pick, and potentially get a new player like that who can be on our roster for a long time. It to be a very good young player, or young players who are maybe a little bit further along in the line than an 18-year-old that could step in and do the same thing, be part of our lineup for a long time.”
The Sharks will try to add a big name and now have the assets to do so with two top-10 picks.
