Gino Reda: “Going into Friday night’s NHL draft, there was a lot of talk surrounding Connor Hellebuyck, and what the Winnipeg Jets would do with him. Would they move him during the draft? Would they move him before the draft? But nothing happened there. So now the question becomes, Dregs, what do the Winnipeg Jets do moving forward with Hellebuyck?
What Does Jason Robertson Want to do? Is an Offer Sheet the Dallas Stars Out?
Dreger: “Well, there’s a couple of things that have to be considered here. If you’re management, ownership of the Winnipeg Jets, because a lot of time and effort was invested in trying to appease Hellebuyck and move him along.
I mean, the primary targets seem to be the Buffalo Sabres, a ton of back and forth between Jarmo Kekalainen and Kevin Cheveldayoff. But in the end, it feels like the Buffalo Sabres pulled back because they didn’t get comfortable with the package that the Jets commanded to move a future Hall of Famer in Connor Hellebuyck.
So, of course, there’s time here for teams to revisit the possibility of trading Conor Hellebuyck. We’re early into the offseason, but how about this theory? I mean, Cheveldayoff continues to have trade conversations with players, with defensemen, with forwards. Could it bolster their lineup to a point where they go back to Hellebuyck and say, ‘All right, our roster is better. Does this change your mind? Are you interested in staying?’
So, there are a couple of things being considered here.”

“And the final one is Connor Hellebuyck. Depending on who you speak to yesterday, there were people who thought that a deal between Winnipeg and Buffalo was close. And Hellebuyck agreed to go to Buffalo.
Now, obviously, it wasn’t to the satisfaction of the Winnipeg Jets, who really want to try to hit a home run with this deal. But there was a time yesterday where people thought this was going to occur.
NHL Rumors: Connor Hellebuyck and Matthew Knies
Buffalo decided the price was too high. I think the challenge now for a lot of these trades is, it’s not a first-round pick in the immediate draft that you can do anymore. Any draft picks you’re doing for first-rounders aren’t until next year. Let’s see how that changes the landscape.
