There’s no need for a drastic overhaul at Leeds United this summer, with Daniel Farke able to build upon a solid first season back in the Premier League.

It must be said that the German has done a fine job at Elland Road in recent years, not least when overcoming the disappointment of the club’s playoff final heartache in 2024.

To then lose arguably the two key men of that campaign, in the form of Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter, might well have derailed other managers, yet Farke did the business regardless, having since proven that he can be an effective coach at Premier League level.

Having comfortably staved off the drop in the end last time out, this squad merely needs a little fine-tuning to try and go to that next level in 2026/27.

Leeds hold advantage in race to seal next summer signing

Official confirmation appears to be imminent for Leeds’ first deal of the summer, having seemingly reached an agreement for the capture of departing Fulham talisman, Harry Wilson.

Landing the 29-year-old on a free transfer marks a real coup for the Yorkshire side, with the Welshman enjoying such a stellar season at Craven Cottage, after chalking up 17 goals and assists in the top flight.

That signing could well be added to by Julian Brandt’s own free transfer arrival from Germany, yet the Whites aren’t only concerned with the forward line, amid the need to sort out the goalkeeping situation at Elland Road.

Indeed, Illan Meslier has already departed, while it remains to be seen if the in-demand Karl Darlow will return, following the veteran’s recent contract expiry.

With that in mind, Farke is searching for a new number one, with Football Insider reporting that the club do appear to have the edge on Aston Villa in the race to sign Parma star, Zion Suzuki.

The suggestion is that Leeds are currently better placed to sign the 23-year-old, after carrying out extensive groundwork, with Villa still yet to resolve Emi Martinez’s future at the club.

Before the Midlands side can even enter the bidding, the 49ers are hopeful of striking a swift deal to land the highly-regarded Japan international, fresh from his World Cup exploits.

Why Suzuki could be Leeds’ biggest talent since Rutter

There is a solidity and experience to this current Leeds side that is to be admired, although it could be argued that they are lacking a genuine superstar in the making, a young player who could potentially be sold on for significant profit later down the line.

Back in 2023/24, for instance, the Whites boasted both Summerville and Rutter, the latter of whom was so immense that year, such a delight to watch in his roaming number ten or number nine role.

In all, the £35.5m-rated Frenchman scored and assisted 21 goals in the Championship that season, creating a remarkable 22 ‘big chances’ to emerge as the real driving force of Farke’s side.

While operating in a different role, Suzuki could well be another almost talismanic figure for the Whites, a player who might be the envy of even the Premier League elite next season.

Still only 23, the former Manchester United target has already laid out ambitions to become “one of the best goalkeepers in the world“, amid his fine recent form for both club and country.

At the World Cup, for instance, he conceded just five goals in four games prior to Japan’s round of 32 exit, making 12 saves in total and making no errors leading to a goal or shot.

Against Brazil, in particular, the young stopper stood firm for much of the contest, making four saves in total, having certainly not warranted a place on the losing side.

Such form is no real surprise considering his heroics back in Italy over recent years, notably ranking fourth in Serie A for total saves made per 90 in 2025/26.

The year prior too, he was also fifth with regard to saves made from inside the box, having only made one error leading to a goal across the last two campaigns.

In 2024/25 and 2025/26, he made 166 saves in total, even while restricted to just 20 starts in the most recent campaign.

To already be performing at the elite level, and on the global stage, is a testament to him considering his relative youth for a goalkeeper, with this deal likely to represent a significant coup for those at Elland Road.

Of course, there is a balance and calm to Farke’s side right now, yet every now and then, a team needs a little sprinkling of magic, be it Rutter in attack, or a rising star like Suzuki in the sticks.

Lucas Perri better watch out…
