Glasgow Rangers head coach Derek McInnes moved quickly to bolster the options at his disposal in the defensive areas of the pitch in the summer transfer window.
The Light Blues only kept one clean sheet in the last 13 matches of the 2025/26 Scottish Premiership campaign, as Danny Rohl‘s side ultimately fell short in the title race.
They clearly needed to add more quality to their backline to ensure that they are not as easy to score past in their efforts to win the title next term.
Ross McCrorie has been brought in on a permanent deal from Bristol City to replace James Tavernier at right-back, whilst Ivor Pandur has signed from Hull City, with Jack Butland moving in the opposite direction.
The most intriguing signing for the back four so far, however, has been the arrival of Ben Godfrey on loan from Serie A side Atalanta, with an option to make the deal permanent next summer.
Why Ben Godfrey is a risk worth taking for Rangers
Rangers have been burned several times in recent years by English players looking to resurrect their careers. Think back to Kieran Dowell, Max Aarons, and Joe Rothwell, but Godfrey joins with more pedigree than all of them.
For starters, he has been capped twice by England. He earned a call-up in 2021 under Gareth Southgate after impressing for Everton in the 2020/21 campaign, with legendary coach Carlo Ancelotti as his manager.
The former Real Madrid and Milan boss signed the versatile defender from Norwich for a fee of £25m in 2019, whilst none of the aforementioned English players had ever been capped by England or signed for as much as £25m.
He has not had as much success in recent years, going out on loan to Ipswich Town, Sheffield United, and Brondby, and his current market value has dropped to £4.2m on Transfermarkt.
This should be seen as an opportunity by McInnes and his coaching staff, though, because there is a £25m-rated England calibre centre-back waiting to be unlocked, which is why this deal is a risk worth taking.
Whilst the Light Blues will be hoping to get Godfrey back to his former glory, the club have already struck gold on a defender who is now worth more than the former England international.
Rangers hit gold on star who’s worth more than Ben Godfrey
Back in the January transfer window at the start of this year, the Scottish giants signed a player for less than the £4.3m that Godfrey is currently valued at, and he is already worth more.
The Gers swooped to sign Belgian left-back Tuur Rommens from Westerlo for a fee of £3m to bolster Rohl’s options in that position, having lost Jefte and Ridvan Yilmaz the previous summer.
It is hard to predict how players will adapt to a new league, a new country, and a new language, but the left-footed star hit the ground running in the Premiership in the second half of the campaign.

He produced an eye-catching one goal and five ‘big chances’ created in eight starts and ten appearances in the top-flight for the Gers in his first five months at the club after his move from Belgium.
The 23-year-old showed that he can offer a constant threat down the left flank, overlapping his winger to put dangerous deliveries into the box on a regular basis, as evidenced how highly he ranked among his positional peers in several attacking metrics.
It was not only the offensive side of the game where he caught the eye, though, as the full-back also averaged 2.8 tackles and interceptions per game and won 59% of his ground duels and 70% of his aerial battles.
In fact, he ranked in the top 18% of left-backs in the league for ground duel success rate and the top 12% for aerial duel success rate, which shows how dominant he was as an out-and-out defender, instantly adapting to the physicality of Scottish football.
As a result of his fantastic performances for Rangers in the second half of last season, Rommens’ Transfermarkt value has soared up to £6m, double what the club paid for him in January.
This shows that the Scottish giants have already hit the jackpot with the young defender, who is now worth more than former England international Ben Godfrey, as his value is rising at Ibrox.
Rangers can finally sell Nico Raskin by signing £4.8m star
Rangers are reportedly eyeing up a star who could be the perfect replacement for Nicolas Raskin.
