Ilia Topuria has spoken about the mental strain of his divorce, explaining that the sudden change in his family life forced him to focus on the parts of life he could still control.
The former UFC lightweight champion had stepped away from competition during a public separation from Giorgina Uzcategui, a period that became more difficult as custody issues and online discussion brought his private life into the spotlight. Topuria later reached an out-of-court settlement with Uzcategui, ending the legal dispute and allowing him to resume his fighting schedule.

In comments shared by ALF Global, Topuria described how quickly his day-to-day reality changed. “When something is out of my control, I just focus on what’s under my control. It’s my life, and I have to figure out what I need to do.”
That approach became central during a time when he could not solve the situation through the preparation and routine that usually shape his career. Topuria said he did not expect the relationship to end in the way it did, while acknowledging that life can change without warning.
“If I expected her to behave like she did? I don’t know, to be honest. Things happen in life. No, I didn’t expect it. It’s not easy when you go through those kind of situations,” Topuria said. “Every morning I was waking up with my daughter and my family. And it changed in one second… It’s a learning opportunity. It’s an experience. It is what it is,” he told CBS Sports. “There are always two options: to live it in a bad or good way.”
The divorce situation also preceded Topuria’s return to the Octagon at UFC Freedom 250, the UFC’s White House event on June 14. He entered the main event as the unbeaten lightweight champion against interim titleholder Justin Gaethje, but suffered the first defeat of his MMA career after absorbing sustained damage across four rounds. Topuria’s corner stopped the contest before the fifth round, handing Gaethje a TKO victory, the undisputed lightweight belt and Topuria’s first professional loss.
The result ended the Spanish-Georgian’s 17-fight unbeaten run and left him with a 17-1 professional record. He later said Gaethje took the vision from his right eye in the first round and his left eye by the end of the second, while congratulating the American and signaling his intention to pursue a rematch once recovered.

The former champion has been clear that the public nature of the situation added another layer. He told CBS Sports that discussion of his relationship was difficult because it involved more than himself. “It’s about my kids and my family,” he said, adding that public opinions on the matter made the situation tougher.

The settlement reportedly established a visitation arrangement for Topuria and his daughter, while keeping the family in Spain. Reports said the agreement also resolved the dispute around his Madrid home and gym.
For now, Topuria’s priorities appear to be recovery, time with his daughter and a route back to the lightweight title picture. The former champion has already made clear that he wants another shot at Gaethje, though his return will depend on how he recovers from the damage sustained at the White House event. After a year shaped by separation, legal proceedings and his first defeat, Topuria is aiming to rebuild on his own terms.
