Chelsea‘s summer rebuild has shown no signs of slowing down as Xabi Alonso continues reshaping his squad ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
The Blues have already completed the signing of highly-rated Atalanta full-back Marco Palestra and remain in talks over a move for Rayo Vallecano left-back Pep Chavarria as they look to strengthen their defensive options.
Elsewhere, a surprise move for Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka failed to materialise, despite Chelsea exploring a deal for the experienced midfielder who worked under Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen.
Outgoings have also become a major focus, with Marc Cucurella joining Real Madrid, Andrey Santos signing for Man United and Tyrique George sealing a permanent exit to Everton already.
While much of the attention has centred on high-profile arrivals, Chelsea are also working quietly on another area of the squad.
Chelsea hold talks with Alex McCarthy, but he could join Leicester instead
According to Chelsea journalist Simon Phillips, the club have made contact with former Southampton and Leeds goalkeeper Alex McCarthy over a potential move to Stamford Bridge.
The 36-year-old is available after leaving St Mary’s on a free and is one of several experienced homegrown goalkeepers Chelsea have considered as they look to add depth without committing significant transfer funds.
However, completing the deal may not be straightforward.
Phillips reports that McCarthy’s preference is currently to become a first-choice goalkeeper elsewhere rather than accept a supporting role in west London, so he could end up in League One or League Two.

|
Credibility |
Simon Phillips has established himself as one of the most reliable journalists covering Chelsea’s transfer activity. While he focuses almost exclusively on the club, many of his exclusives are later corroborated by national reporters. His information is generally well-connected, although transfer situations can naturally change as negotiations develop. |
|
Finances |
Chelsea’s interest is driven by value as much as experience. McCarthy is available without a transfer fee, allowing the club to strengthen cheaply if Jorgensen and Slonina leave. With significant spending elsewhere this summer, adding an experienced free agent would help maintain balance while keeping overall squad costs under control. |
|
Insight |
McCarthy has built a long career through his consistency, resilience and professionalism. He remains a commanding presence in the penalty area and is widely respected for his attitude behind the scenes. Even if no longer a regular Premier League starter, his experience could still prove valuable within a younger squad. |
|
Impact |
If Chelsea eventually persuade McCarthy to join, his biggest contribution may come away from the spotlight. He would provide dependable emergency cover, mentor younger goalkeepers and raise standards in training. Those qualities are often overlooked, but they can play an important role across a demanding Premier League season. |
Leicester City are understood to be among the clubs who could sign him instead, while Chelsea’s hopes may also depend on resolving the futures of Filip Jorgensen and Gabriel Slonina before making room for another goalkeeper.
The interest reflects a shift in Chelsea’s thinking.
Chelsea’s interest in McCarthy highlights chase for experience
After years of prioritising younger signings with long-term potential, the club now appear keen to add experienced professionals capable of strengthening the dressing room as well as providing reliable cover.

Alonso is believed to value leadership and know-how, particularly within a squad that still contains plenty of developing talent.
McCarthy would certainly bring both.
The goalkeeper has accumulated nearly 300 senior appearances in total across spells with Reading, Crystal Palace, Leeds, Southampton, QPR, Ipswich Town, Yeovil and others, while also earning an England cap.
Although his opportunities became more limited in recent seasons, he remains well respected for his professionalism and experience around the training ground.
The biggest issue is whether the role appeals to him.
