Tottenham Hotspur head coach Roberto De Zerbi is keen to add more quality to his squad after narrowly avoiding relegation from the Premier League last season.

The Lilywhites have already brought in Marcos Senesi, Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, and Jan Paul van Hecke, and now they are looking to bolster their forward line.

One of the attackers who remains on the club’s radar is Manchester City winger Savinho, who was a target for former Spurs boss Thomas Frank last summer.

Tottenham are hoping to strike a deal with their Premier League rivals to bring the Brazil international to North London to strengthen their options on the flanks.

Why Tottenham should avoid signing Savinho

Spurs, though, should avoid doing a deal to sign Savinho from the Cityzens, because they already have a similar player with the same weaknesses in Mohammed Kudus.

The club splashed out £55m to sign Kudus from West Ham United last year after he scored five goals in 35 matches for the Hammers in the 2024/25 campaign, and he only scored three goals in 26 games for the Lilywhites last season.

Savinho is a left-footed wide player, like the Ghana international, and is also a forward who has failed to score goals on a regular basis in the Premier League.

The 22-year-old star has registered 13 assists in the last two seasons for City, showing strong creative qualities, but he has only scored seven goals in 84 appearances in all competitions.

Savinho has scored two goals from 7.34 xG in the last two Premier League campaigns, missing 12 ‘big chances’, which shows that he is incredibly inefficient in front of goal.

He is similar to Kudus, who scored seven goals from 8.83 xG in those two seasons, and that is why Spurs should be looking for a different profile of winger, so that they do not have two players with the same weaknesses in that area of the pitch.

Spurs in talks to sign a better winger than Savinho

The club are looking at another winger, though, who would be a different profile to what De Zerbi currently has at his disposal, and would arrive as a more impactful signing than Savinho would be.

Football Insider reports that Tottenham Hotspur are one of the clubs interested in a deal to sign Andreas Schjelderup from Benfica in the summer transfer window.

The outlet claims that the Lilywhites have made contact to open talks with the Portuguese giants over a potential move for the Norway international in the coming weeks.

It adds that an exit from Benfica is looking likely for the 22-year-old forward because he is not set to put pen to paper on an extension, which could make them consider a sale this summer.

Norway's Andreas Schjelderup

The Norway international, who is valued at £34m, would be a far more impactful signing than Savinho on the evidence of their output in the final third in the 2025/26 campaign.

Schjelderup racked up 11 goal contributions in Liga Portugal for Benfica last term, nine more than the Brazil international managed for Manchester City, and outperformed his xG in the process.

The Norwegian star, who can play off the left or the right flank as a right-footed forward, produced ten goals and five assists in all competitions for his club, including two goals in seven games in the Champions League.

Schjelderup, whom analyst Filipe Sousa claimed has “world-class potential“, also showcased his quality on the world stage with Norway at the World Cup this summer.

The Spurs target scored one goal, against England in the quarter-finals, and provided three assists in six matches for Norway, despite only starting two of their games.

His goal contributions all came against top nations, as he scored against England, supplied one assist against France, and assisted two goals in a win over Brazil in the last 16.

The £34m-rated star’s performances at the World Cup suggest that he has a strong chance of adapting to the quality of the Premier League, as he has already shown that he can mix it with the best against top nations.

Therefore, Schjelderup would be a better and more impactful signing than Savinho, who does not offer as much at the top end of the pitch and failed to make the Brazil squad for the World Cup.
