It looked almost guaranteed that Ederson would become a Manchester United player this summer. The Red Devils agreed a few, welcomed the midfielder for a medical and then discovered an issue at the final hurdle.
Those at Old Trafford have since moved on to sign Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos in an impressive double deal, whilst Ederson is back at Atalanta.
His Premier League dreams may not be done just yet, though. United’s loss could quickly become Newcastle United‘s gain.
The Magpies are desperate for midfield reinforcements amid the threat of losing Bruno Guimaraes not long after losing Sandro Tonali, and also missing out on Johan Manzambi.

Newcastle’s midfield targets |
|
|---|---|
|
Lucas Bergvall (Tottenham Hotspur) |
The Magpies have seen an offer worth as much as £46m rejected for the Spurs star, who has told the club that he wants to leave this summer. The young midfielder would be a quality addition, but there are already concerns that other clubs have outbid those on Tyneside. |
|
Danilo (Botafogo) |
Danilo would be an interesting choice. Having rebuilt himself in Brazil, earning a place in Carlo Ancelotti’s World Cup squad, the former Nottingham Forest man could solve a lot of problems out of possession at Newcastle. Whether they want to prioritise players in Europe will be the sticking point, however. |
|
Mandela Keita (Parma) |
After missing out on Manzambi, Mandela Keita would make a lot of sense. The Parma man will come a lot cheaper than the Swiss international and could offer similar quality as a 24-year-old Serie A star, who was in the top 95% for successful duels last season. |
|
Ederson (Atalanta) |
For once, it could be Newcastle who take advantage of another club’s slip to sign Ederson from Atalanta. Eddie Howe is reportedly a fan of the Brazilian and those at St James’ Park know that he won’t break the bank, given that Man United agreed a deal worth less than £40m. |
As Newcastle scramble to find midfield reinforcements, Ederson should become an increasingly realistic option. The Atalanta man wouldn’t cost an absurd fee, is clearly open to a move away from Atalanta, and has the quality to thrive at St James’ Park.
Newcastle gifted green light to sign Ederson
As reported by Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, Newcastle have been gifted the green light to sign Ederson this summer. The midfielder is now open to joining the Magpies just weeks after his move to Man United collapsed.
Those at Old Trafford initially agreed a deal worth just £37m to sign the midfielder, before he failed his medical. As far as Newcastle are concerned, that’s a bargain price that they can take full advantage of if their medical team okays the move.

It will be a near-impossible job to replicate Guimaraes’ ability in possession, but Ederson can at least better his compatriot’s work off the ball and that would be crucial as Newcastle enter a transitional period.
