Miami Hurricanes running back Jordan Lyle was arrested last Thursday on charges of reckless driving and fleeing police.
He was released on a $55,000 bond and pleaded not guilty to both charges against him.
On Tuesday, details of the incident that led to his arrest were released, via Adam Lichtenstein of The South Florida Sun Sentinel, who cited a probable cause affidavit released Tuesday by the Sunrise Police Department.
The affidavit alleges that a gray BMW registered to Lyle was clocked going 92 mph in an area with a 65 mph speed limit shortly after 7 p.m. on July 10.
The Sunrise Police Officer, Detective Jonathan Hennessy, turned on his lights and sirens to try to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver of the vehicle “rapidly accelerated.” Hennessy estimated that the car travelled at approximately 130 mph as it was evading him.
Jordan Lyle arrest details revealed via probable cause affidavit
The driver “repeatedly closed to extremely short following distances behind slower-moving vehicles and then made rapid, abrupt and unsafe lane changes to maneuver between vehicles. The BMW continued weaving between occupied lanes of traffic while creating increasing distance from my marked patrol vehicle,” said the affidavit.
The officer decided to call off the chase for the safety of the public, but it was later found that the BMW was registered to Lyle; it was linked to him via his parents’ home security system and cell phone records showed that Lyle was driving that route at the time of the alleged incident.
On July 15, the police executed a search warrant and spoke with Lyle via FaceTime. He then gave a sworn statement at the Sunrise Police Department later that day.
“We’re waiting for legal to take its course of action, and we’ll decide everything from there,” Miami head coach Mario Cristobal said regarding the incident.
Lyle is a junior from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Over the past two seasons, he rushed 89 times for 508 yards and five touchdowns — including four touchdowns as a freshman.
