Derby County are now readying their move to sign Stephy Mavididi this summer, sparking major concern for the relegated Leicester City.
Derby readying Mavididi raid
Before the campaign commenced, no one was expecting the story that would eventually unfold. If anyone was pushed for a relegation candidate between Leicester and Derby, it would likely be the latter whilst the Foxes were tipped for promotion.
Now, almost 12 months later, Leicester are relegated and the Rams finished eighth. It has been an extraordinary season. It’s handed those at the King Power plenty to reflect on, but those at Pride Park are unlikely to hand them the time to perform that self-reflection – instantly targeting one of their top players.
According to Sports Boom, Derby are now readying their move to sign Mavididi in a huge blow for Leicester. The winger isn’t against the idea of leaping back up to the second tier and he’s one of many names who could be sold amid financial concerns for the Foxes this summer.
In terms of quality, Mavididi is certainly good enough to make the step back up to the Championship. It wasn’t so long ago that former Leicester boss Enzo Maresca was full of praise for the winger – saying: “He’s a fantastic player who has been very important for us this season and will be important for us in the future too.”
That same “fantastic” player couldn’t do enough to keep Leicester afloat in the second tier, but may well get a second chance to prove himself courtesy of Derby this summer.
Eustace has “immense” pride despite playoff failure
Whilst it didn’t quite work out as planned for the Rams in the end, they were back competing for a place in the top six this season after spending the last campaign fighting for their Championship place. With that in mind, there’s no shame in finishing eighth and just four points adrift of the playoffs.
John Eustace is certainly still proud of his side, too. He told reporters on the final day of the season last weekend: “I’m sitting here with immense pride at what we’ve done this year.
“The players have been outstanding, irrespective of the result today. The effort of the group and the progression we’ve made this season has been excellent.
“Hopefully, it’s really exciting times to be part of the football club moving forward. I think this was the highest league attendance in the EFL today, so it just shows the size of the club and the fan base.
“Where we want to go is obviously to get into the Premier League with the backing over the next two or three seasons. That’s why I came and that’s what we want to do.”
