Virginia Tech has landed a commitment from West Palm Beach (Fla.) Palm Beach Lakes three-star defensive back Turmarian Moreland.
The Hokies beat out a number of other programs for Moreland, including finalists like Auburn, Georgia and Louisville.
Moreland took an official visit to Blacksburg, Virginia a few weeks ago. He feels confident in the direction of the program under the leadership of new head coach James Franklin.
“It just felt like home when I went on my official visit, and our trust with coach Franklin and what he’s building over there,” Moreland said of why he chose Virginia Tech.
He expounded on why he thinks Franklin is the right guy to lead the Hokie football program back to national prominence.
“I feel like it’s just him as a person, not as only a coach, but he’s a great guy, personally,” he said. “And I feel like if football [doesn’t work out], he’ll still be somebody I can call and check on.”
Franklin was pumped to learn the news of Moreland joining VT’s 2027 recruiting class — which ranks No. 9 nationally.
“Excited, he was very excited — and I felt like he knew that he got a dog,” he said of Franklin’s reaction to him committing.
He says Virginia Tech’s coaching staff is looking for him to play the ‘star’ position defensively — a hybrid role that mixes the responsibilities of a linebacker and a defensive back.
247Sports ranks the 6-foot-2, 170-pounder as the No. 31 athlete nationally and as the No. 42 player in the state of Florida.
Moreland was a two-way player as a junior, totaling 45 tackles, two tackles for loss and seven pass breakups on defense while adding 10 catches for 87 yards offensively.
