Martin O’Neill will be more aware than most just how much work this current Celtic side needs. The veteran manager got the Bhoys over the line last season, but it wasn’t as routine as many have come to expect and those at Parkhead will be desperate to avoid similar tension.
Rangers’ business has certainly upped the pressure on the champions too. The Gers have already welcomed a number of fresh faces, and that could force Celtic to respond by signing a Premier League midfielder.
O’Neill is now reportedly leading the charge to sign Alfie Devine from Tottenham Hotspur following an impressive loan spell at Preston North End last time out.

Football FanCast’s Verdict |
|
|---|---|
|
Credibility |
Devine has been on Celtic’s radar more than once over the last 12 months and with his game time unlikely to improve at Tottenham, a permanent move should be on the cards. After proving his quality in the Championship, a move to Scotland would certainly make sense. |
|
Finances |
It remains to be seen how much Spurs will charge for their young defender. He still has plenty of potential at just 21 years old and has spent the last few seasons out on loan. |
|
Insight |
Devine has spent time in Belgium and in the Championship, gaining much-needed experience and earning plenty of praise. Last season was his most impressive yet, as he scored eight goals and assisted another eight in all competitions. |
|
Impact |
The arrival of Devine would certainly raise question marks about the future of other midfield stars. Arne Engels has been the constant subject of speculation and the Tottenham man could quickly become his replacement. |
If Tottenham’s asking price is in Celtic’s range, then the Bhoys should launch an offer as soon as possible and hand O’Neill his transfer target.
O’Neill driving move to sign Alfie Devine
According to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke. O’Neill is driving Celtic’s move to sign Devine from Tottenham this summer. The Bhoys have already completed a scouting mission on the midfielder and could now accelerate their pursuit.
“Alfie Devine is a player that Celtic have been tracking for a while. Martin O’Neill and his coaching staff have made regular scouting trips to watch Devine in action for Preston last season.” – O’Rourke
As Celtic look to revive their frontline, the former Preston loanee should be a strong candidate to arrive at the right price this summer.
Celtic should go all out to sign Devine
On paper, Devine ticks every box. He is young, but not inexperienced. He is someone that O’Neill has already watched in person and been impressed by, and he is a player that Spurs are willing to sell.
At a time when Daizen Maeda is publicly considering his future and rumours are surrounding a potential record move for Engels, the Bhoys desperately need the boost that Devine would provide.
As Parkhead chiefs push to commence their transfer business, welcoming a young talent from the Premier League would be the perfect statement.
