After fending off relegation in the Premier League upon their top-flight return, Leeds United now need to place their focus on landing quality over quantity this summer.
Daniel Farke has even spoken out in recent weeks about the need for added quality if he is to be successful and take the Whites to the next level in England’s top-flight.
His calls have certainly been answered in recent weeks, as Harry Wilson completed his move to Yorkshire – subsequently penning a four-year deal after leaving Fulham this summer.
The Welsh international rejected advances from Europa League winners Aston Villa for his services – highlighting the coup pulled off by Farke and the 49ers.
However, the club’s transfer business appears to be ramping up once again, having agreed a big-money deal to land one defensive talent.
What Muharemovic will bring to Leeds in 2026/27
Over the last couple of days, Leeds agreed a staggering €40m (£34m) deal with Italian outfit Sassuolo for the signature of centre-back Tarik Muharemovic.
Such a deal will depend on the 23-year-old completing a medical in Yorkshire, but upon its completion, it will be one of the most expensive deals in the Whites’ history.
On the face of it, it’s a huge investment from the hierarchy, but what exactly will the Bosnian international bring to Farke’s side in 2026/27 and beyond?
The defender featured 32 times in Italy’s top division and registered a phenomenal tally of 10.9 defensive contributions per 90 – a tally higher than any player in Leeds’ senior ranks.

The aforementioned figure also ranks him in the top 8% of all defenders in the division – highlighting his ability to prevent the opposition from causing havoc within attacking areas.
Muharemovic’s tally of 7.1 clearances made per 90 and his ground duel success of 64% further highlight his quality in the defensive third, as he ranked above 90% of other players in his position.
At just 23, it’s clear that the Bosnian international is a player who has already made huge waves in the professional game, but also has bags of time to reach the next level upon any move to Yorkshire.
Why Leeds’ £40m signing would be a bigger coup than Muharemovic
Despite agreeing a £34m deal with Sassuolo for the signature of Muharemovic this week, Leeds’ transfer business has shown no sign of slowing down as the hierarchy attempt to achieve success.
All areas of the squad could be the subject of added investment this window, as Farke looks to land players who are suitable for his new-look 3-4-2-1 system.
The goalkeeping department is an area which desperately needs addressing after the departures of Illan Meslier and Karl Darlow over the last couple of weeks.
As a result, TEAMtalk have reported that Leeds have been in talks with the player’s representatives and with Manchester City’s hierarchy over the possibility of a switch to Elland Road this summer for James Trafford.
They claim that the 23-year-old will be allowed to depart the Etihad during the current window, but only if the £40m asking price for his signature is met by any interested party.
Farke’s men should be all over such a deal this summer, with the Englishman a player who could cement his place as the club’s number one for at least the next decade.
His stats from years gone by highlight his quality between the sticks – also demonstrating why he’d be a bigger coup than Muharemovic for the Whites ahead of next campaign.
During the 2023/24 season at Burnley, Trafford managed to produce some key figures – many of whom prevented the Clarets from an embarrassing top-flight campaign.
He kept two clean sheets during the relegation-hit campaign, but managed to register a staggering 3.8 saves per 90 – ranking him in the top 25% of all ‘keepers in the division.
Trafford registered 1.1 high claims per 90 during his one top-flight year at Turf Moor, demonstrating his impressive ability to command his area.
£40m would be a huge statement of intent for Leeds – especially on a new goalkeeper – but it would land the club a top-level shot-stopper for many years to come.
There’s no denying Muharemovic would massively improve the options in the defensive department, but a new ‘keeper must be the priority for Farke – with Trafford able to be the perfect option for the manager.
