Whether Harry Kane will be the man to lead England to glory again remains to be seen at Euro 2028, but the former Tottenham Hotspur man could have done little more to try and drag his country over the line this summer.

Yes, the 32-year-old was below par against both Norway and Argentina, but his record speaks for itself, now up to 14 World Cup goals after netting six times in the first five games of this tournament.

Arguably the Three Lions’ greatest-ever tournament player, Kane’s total haul now stands at 85 goals in 121 games at international level, leaving legends of the past in his wake with such ruthless consistency and reliability.

He’s the prolific figurehead too now at Bayern Munich, with those at Spurs no doubt still reeling at the decision to sell the academy graduate back in 2023.

Why Spurs got it horribly wrong with Kane succession plan

Oh, what could’ve been had Kane stayed put three years ago, with supporters missing out on the chance to see the England skipper lining up in an attack-minded set-up under Ange Postecoglou.

Harry Kane’s Premier League goal tallies per season

You sense the Aussie was almost doomed to fail from the start following Kane’s eventual exit to Germany, with the striker having for so long been the talisman in north London.

What makes matters worse is that, remarkably, the Lilywhites didn’t actually sign a direct replacement for their record scorer that summer, with Nottingham Forest’s Brennan Johnson the only senior attacking arrival.

Perhaps Daniel Levy and co took the view that no player could fill Kane’s void, yet leaving Postecoglou without a proven centre-forward was bordering on negligence, not least after Richarlison had scored just once across 2022/23 in the Premier League.

It ultimately took until 2024 for Dominic Solanke to arrive on a then-club record deal, although even then the £65m man had only really enjoyed one standout top-flight season, after netting 19 times in 2023/24.

Perhaps, as to be expected, it hasn’t gone smoothly for the former Chelsea and Liverpool striker since then, netting just 12 league goals in his two seasons in north London.

Be it through the middle or on the flanks, Spurs are in desperate need of someone to step up and fill Kane’s void as the new attacking figurehead.

Maybe, that player will emerge in the form of a new signing.

Spurs would “love” to sign £130m World Cup star

The primary target at present does appear to be Bournemouth’s Eli Junior Kroupi, although there has been no progress on that front at this stage, with the Cherries not likely to be willing sellers.

A deal is expected to advance for Manchester City’s Savinho, the Brazilian seeking a change of scenery having only scored and assisted two Premier League goals last term.

In an ideal world, Spurs would like to set their sights a little higher, with journalist Tom Allnutt, speaking to the Last Word on Spurs, revealing that ENIC would actually “love” to sign Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers.

“I think Morgan Rogers is the kind of the dream signing for Tottenham, if I’m honest. Like, I think that’s the one that they would love to do, but I think there is a recognition clearly that again, you know, there are other clubs interested in Rogers

“There’s a price tag. Arsenal are very much among them apparently, and it’ll obviously be a very difficult to deal to do, but maybe one to watch”.

Signing Kane’s England colleague wouldn’t exactly come cheap, with reports indicating he could fetch as much as £130m, thus eclipsing Tottenham’s club-record investment in Sandro Tonali.

With Arsenal in the frame, striking a deal is also further complicated, yet if ENIC can show their financial muscle again, this is certainly a move to pursue.

Indeed, while not an out-and-out striker like Kane, Rogers has the presence and quality to be the new attacking talisman in north London, the 23-year-old so deadly in all manner of roles for club and country.

Most recently, it was his pinpoint cross that found Anthony Gordon to open the scoring against Argentina, with Rogers having lined up on the right flank on the night.

He is primarily a number ten or second striker at Villa Park, although the Gunners appear keen to utilise him on the left flank, the former Manchester City starlet looking lethal when cutting in onto his favoured right foot.

He’s a real powerhouse, yet also someone, like Kane, who knits things together nicely in attack, having registered six assists last term in the top-flight, while creating 13 ‘big chances’.

The year prior, the ex-Middlesbrough man registered ten assists and created 16 ‘big chances’, winning the PFA Young Player of the Year award.

Most importantly too, like Kane, Rogers knows where the back of the net is, having so often conjured up something spectacular for Unai Emery’s side.

Since the start of 2024/25, for instance, he’s scored 18 league goals, a fine return considering he isn’t a number nine.

There’s a ruthlessness to his finishing that is also very Kane-like, not least in the way in which he strikes a ball from range, having only missed four ‘big chances’ in 2025/26, while three of his ten goals came from outside the box.

Of course, a reported £130m fee is rather steep, but Rogers looks like someone who would relish the responsibility of being Tottenham’s main man moving forward.
