The process of updating our 2027 national rankings actually began a month ago. It was right on the heels of the July recruiting period when we had seen all we that needed to identify the top 10 prospects in the class. That 10 turned to 11 when AJ Williams, previously the top-ranked prospect in 2028, announced his reclassification to 2027, making him a top five rising senior.
That left 139 spots left to figure out. While we may be the only national media outlet to have seen not just every major sneaker circuit but also every top independent circuit, any reputable evaluator understands that the eye test alone is not sufficient when so much other information is available.
Consequently, we spent the past five weeks pouring through the video and analytics as part of our Summer Scouting Series. By breaking down the best of each position on each circuit and gradually funneling them into positional depth charts and ultimately the full 150, we created the building blocks to today’s newly released rankings.

What we didn’t consider was where prospects were ranked previously. While much of the public narrative often surrounds who “falls” when rankings are updated, we look at it much differently.
To be ranked at all means you are among the top 1% of the top 1%. Exactly where you fall in that list is a byproduct not of whether you played better or worse this summer than we’d previously seen, but where we projected you relative to the rest of the prospects, first at your position and then in the class as a whole.
Speaking of positions, that’s another area where we differentiate ourselves. It is not our job to co-sign whatever narrative a player, their parents or even coaches are hoping to perpetuate. It is however our job to forecast what position we think each player will be best suited for at the next level while our scouting reports and analysis often recognize those with the versatility to potentially play and defend multiple positions.
2027 basketball recruiting rankings update: Breaking down 15 biggest movers after July
As a reminder, our criteria for rankings includes three different variables.
First and foremost, at the top of the class, is a prospect’s upside to be drafted (not coincidentally we were the only outlet to have had every one-and-done prospect from the 2026 NBA Draft ranked nationally). The second factor is a prospect’s projected impact at the college level. A distant third is their career to date.
In other words, we’re not ranking the best high school or grassroots players. We’re ranking the prospects for subsequent levels and, in so doing, creating a future’s market.
As for the specifics of this 2027 class, it is one in a state of flux. More than 10 prospects who were previously ranked, including three different former top 10 prospects, reclassified up and are now enrolled as college freshmen.
While the same trend is expected to repeat itself from 2028 to 2027, it is still in the early stages. Five-star prospects like Adan Diggs and Williams have made the move, but the sheer volume of prospects to follow suit is expected to go up as the year progresses.

The other thing that could prove to be fluid this year is the battle for the top spot.
