Although spring football came and went without much fanfare, major developments on practice fields across the country have prompted experts to shake up the preseason college football rankings. It’s good news for Ohio State and Texas, while Georgia, Miami and LSU find themselves outside the top five.

Ohio State entered Big Ten Championship weekend ranked No. 1 nationally but dropped two straight games to end the season on a sour note. Texas, which opened 2025 at No. 1 in the polls, missed the CFP entirely. Both programs enter 2026 with major chips on their shoulders — and the talent to back it up.

The Big Ten enters the fall as the premier conference in college football until further notice. The league has won three straight national championships with three different programs and boasts a trio of teams in the preseason top five.
