Manchester United have made contact to sign former Liverpool star Neco Williams amid his impressive form at Nottingham Forest.

What Jurgen Klopp said about Neco Williams

Upon a move to the City Ground being completed in the summer of 2022, Jurgen Klopp admitted it was disappointing to see Williams leave, saying: “He’s a bright, exciting talent and he’s going to a club that is upwardly mobile in this moment.

“He’s achieved so much already but there is even more to come. Premier League and Champions League experience for us; a promotion last season with Fulham, who looked after him superbly, I must say; a contributor to our trophy wins for sure; one of Wales’ most important players and going to a World Cup.

“It’s not easy to let him leave if I’m being honest, but he deserves to be playing regularly and he’s earned the right to be ready for his international team for this tournament coming in the winter.”

Since then, the full-back has gone on to become an important player for Nottingham Forest, making 158 appearances for the club, and the Tricky Trees are keen to tie him down to a new contract, with his current deal set to expire set to expire in 2029.

That is according to a report from BBC Sport, which also states Man United have now made a discreet enquiry to sign Williams regarding a summer deal, with Premier League rivals Newcastle United, Everton and Aston Villa doing the same.

The 25-year-old currently rakes in £65k-a-week, but Forest are looking to offer him improved terms, as they are determined to ward off the interest from elsewhere.

Williams now one of Forest’s most important players

The Wrexham-born defender, who is capable of playing on both sides of the defence, has got a lot of football under his belt this season, making 51 appearances in all competitions, and he has missed just one Premier League game, which was due to suspension.

Man United have been urged to sign a left-back by Gary Neville, ahead of what is set to be a much more congested campaign next season, with Michael Carrick‘s side set to return to the Champions League.

Neville said: “If you’re going to play 4-4-2, which I am massively in favour of United doing, you have to have two very special players in there and have defenders who can play one-on-one.

“You’re asking a lot of the players. I think United need a left-back for next season because Luke Shaw has played every game this year and he may struggle.”

Shaw has previously struggled on the injury front at Man United, so Carrick could do with bringing in a left-back who is available for every game, and Williams has proven he could be up to the task.
