MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. — The Elite 11 Finals is underway as the nation’s premier quarterback competition kicked off with a two-hour throwing session under the lights of Mira Costa High on Friday night.

While MVPs are never crowned on Day 1, the opening workout of the three-day event usually identifies some contenders for the coveted title in the 20-man field and this year was no different as a handful of the finalists turned in rather complete performances.

After a lengthy warm-up, the signal-callers rotated through drills before competing against each other in the annual Code Eleven Rail-shot challenge. They threw at both stationary and moving targets around the field from a variety of different drops and platforms.

Instead of a traditional 1-11 ranking of the quarterbacks, this year we have elected to award a letter grade for each of the finalists the first two days along with an Alpha Dog each night. We’ll still have our top 11 at the conclusion of the showcase, but the grades are intended to provide a snapshot of each quarterback’s performance for that given session.
