Such a tally, combined with his 2.8 tackles made and 3.5 aerial duels won per 90, demonstrates his remarkable defensive ability – something which Carrick is no doubt craving.

Spending £70m on Romero would be a huge investment from INEOS this summer, but it’s a deal which could hand the side the needed talent in the backline.

His leadership qualities could also prove vital in the Red Devils’ hunt for success – whilst also offering a needed option to take the armband should Bruno depart.
